Trump's $10B BBC lawsuit takes thrilling turn towards deposition doom

Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. A federal judge is warning President Donald Trump that his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC could be dismissed if he doesn’t get his act together and produce the information the news outlet is entitled to. I mean, you’d think the President would have a team of lawyers on top of this, but apparently not. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Aytch Lett told Trump’s personal attorneys that “engaging in discovery is burdensome, but is a burden we undertake, especially if we file a lawsuit.” Bless their hearts, it seems like they need a reminder of how the legal system works.

The judge also backed a subpoena from the BBC for membership records at Mar-a-Lago, because why not, right? I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that the President is being sued over a documentary about his political comeback. Lett expressed skepticism that Trump and his team had done an adequate job searching for internal documents related to the case. I tend to agree with her, it does strain credulity that a thorough search has been done.

The BBC is entitled to information shedding light on the “message” of Trump’s January 6, 2021, speech and the “impression” it left. But the court said they’re not giving the media company a green light to “relitigate” the events of January 6. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. The BBC has issued at least 47 subpoenas to former and current government officials, as well as private advisers in Trump’s circle. That’s a lot of subpoenas, if you ask me.

Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a whole story about Trump’s lawsuit against the BBC. The President alleges he was defamed by the media company with a documentary on his political comeback that aired before the 2024 election. The documentary joined one section of his remarks, in which he told his supporters to “walk down to the Capitol,” with a later portion, in which he told the protestors that “we fight like hell.” I’m no lawyer, but it seems like the President might be in a bit of trouble here.

The proceedings showed how the president’s litigiousness comes with risks, including that lawsuits can expose Trump and his businesses to scrutiny from the parties he is suing. Trump filed the lawsuit against the BBC in December 2025, and it’s been a wild ride ever since. The court said that the BBC was entitled to information about the speech and its impression, but not to relitigate the events of January 6. I’m sure this will all get sorted out in the end, but for now, it’s just a big mess.

In the end, it looks like Trump’s lawsuit against the BBC might not go as smoothly as he thought. The judge is breathing down his neck, and the BBC is digging deep for information. I’m sure it’ll all be over soon, and we can go back to our regular programming. But until then, I’ll just be over here, sipping my coffee and watching the drama unfold. And who knows, maybe Trump will even learn to be more careful about what he says in public – but I wouldn’t count on it.
