I’m sipping my coffee and reading about a 31-year-old Georgia man, Inique Hinton, who allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in downtown Atlanta. I mean, what’s the logic behind that? It’s not like it’s going to solve any problems or make a statement that hasn’t been made before. The guy’s now facing some serious charges, including attempted arson of a federal building and depredation of government property. I guess you could say he’s having a bad week.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, security cameras caught Hinton igniting an item and throwing it towards the building. It hit the fence, caused some flames, and left behind a mess, including burned cloth, lighter fluid, and a glass bottle. It’s a good thing the authorities were able to catch him quickly, or who knows what could have happened. U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg is calling the law enforcement’s response “exemplary,” and I’d have to agree.
Hertzberg made it clear that they’re going to prosecute Hinton to the fullest extent of the law, saying, “We are going to respond with extreme severity when it comes to prosecuting this conduct because we need to send a message that this is not OK.” I’m not sure what kind of message Hinton was trying to send, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t the way to do it. He’s now facing up to 20 years in federal prison for the arson charge and up to 10 years for the depredation charge. That’s a long time to think about what you’ve done.
The building that was targeted is a pretty important one, surrounded by a metal fence and containing offices for ICE as well as an immigration court. It’s not like it’s some abandoned warehouse; it’s a place where people work and conduct important business. Hinton was arrested peacefully at a home in a suburb of Atlanta, which is a relief. I’m just glad no one was hurt in all of this.
It’s worth noting that Hertzberg said he wasn’t aware of Hinton having any prior convictions. Maybe this was just a moment of poor judgment, or maybe there’s more to the story. Either way, it’s a good reminder that our actions have consequences, and sometimes those consequences can be severe.
In the end, it’s just another day, another crazy story in the news. I’ll just shake my head, finish my coffee, and wonder what the world is coming to. And to Inique Hinton, I’d say, “Well, that was a pretty bad idea.” I mean, who tries to throw a Molotov cocktail at a federal building? It’s just not a good plan, and now he’s facing the music. Oh well, at least it’s not boring.
