Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading about the latest debate in the South Carolina Senate race. It’s getting intense down there. South Carolina has emerged as a surprisingly competitive Senate race in the 2026 midterm elections, and the debate between appointed GOP Sen. Darline Graham, Democrat Annie Andrews, and Libertarian nominee Kasie Whitener was quite the showdown. The debate was often contentious, with both Graham and Andrews taking aim at each other. Bless their hearts, they really went at it.
The debate started with Graham calling Andrews the “most radical liberal that’s ever run for state office in South Carolina.” Andrews fired back, saying Graham is the choice of political insiders and not running a serious campaign. Andrews also brought up Graham’s infamous comment about national security not being her thing, saying “If your surgeon said that appendectomies aren’t really his thing, would you still hand him a scalpel? No… So why would we hand Darline Graham a full term in the US Senate?” Ouch, that’s gotta hurt.
Graham tried to defend herself, but it was clear she was on the defensive. She accused Andrews of lying about her liberal positions and being dishonest with the people of South Carolina. Andrews, on the other hand, tried to distance herself from the Democratic Party and the left, saying she supports the Second Amendment and wants to lower taxes on the middle class. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
One of the most interesting moments of the debate was when Graham tried to make transgender attacks land. She brought it up twice, but only briefly, and it seemed like the debate moderator was trying to move on from the topic as quickly as possible. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, but it didn’t quite land.
Graham also defended the Iran war, claiming that Iran nearly had a nuclear weapon, which isn’t backed up by known US intelligence. She argued that the war needs to continue, saying “Why in the world would we stop now when they are still dangerous and we are close to ending the war?” Andrews, on the other hand, pointed out that Graham has had three chances to vote to bring the war to an end and hasn’t done so.
Despite the intensity of the debate, there were few mentions of Trump. Graham praised him for creating an AI task force and waiving restrictions on red-dye diesel, but that was about it. It’s clear that Trump’s unpopularity is a major factor in this race, but neither candidate wanted to make him the focus of the debate.
In conclusion, this debate was a wild ride, folks. Both candidates came out swinging, and it’s clear that this race is going to be a close one. As I finish my coffee and reflect on the debate, I have to say that it’s going to be interesting to see how this all plays out. And let’s be real, if Darline Graham wins, it’ll be a real nail-biter – after all, she’s already proven she can make a memorable gaffe or two.
