Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about a disturbing incident at the University of Chicago, where a 21-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted by a man at a fraternity house. The alleged assault occurred early Sunday at the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house, and the woman, who is not a University of Chicago student, reported the incident around 1:50 a.m. during a party. The Chicago Police Department is investigating, and the university has alerted the community to help with the investigation.
The incident comes as colleges and universities face heightened scrutiny over their handling of sexual assault cases, which is totally understandable. I mean, who doesn’t want to feel safe on campus? The University of Chicago’s chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi said they condemn the violence unequivocally, and their concern is first and foremost for the person harmed. They’re also cooperating with authorities, which is the right thing to do.
The fraternity also released a statement saying that, to the best of their knowledge, no one affiliated with AEPi was involved or complicit with the incident. They’re working with the police to provide any additional information as the investigation continues. The victim went to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment, and the university later alerted the community about the incident to help with the investigation. A person intervened, and the suspect, who has not yet been identified, fled the scene.
Witnesses described the suspect as a South Asian male with a pretty distinctive description, including dark complexion, short hair on the sides, and longer curly hair on top. The university’s alert said that security camera footage showed an individual fitting that description running from the house. The Chicago Police Department is leading the investigation, with support from the University of Chicago Police Department.
The University of Chicago called the reported assault “deeply concerning for the University community.” They also reminded everyone that all University students are subject to University policies and disciplinary procedures, even if they’re part of an unrecognized student organization like a fraternity. The university remains committed to addressing sexual misconduct cases, imposing disciplinary consequences as warranted, and continually improving efforts to prevent sexual misconduct.
The Alpha Epsilon Pi national fraternity also released a statement saying that they unconditionally oppose any conduct considered as “sexual harassment” or “sexual assault.” They prohibit this kind of behavior in their conditions of membership, which is a good thing. I just hope they’re taking concrete steps to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future.
In conclusion, this is a disturbing incident, and I hope the authorities can catch the suspect and bring them to justice. It’s a reminder that we need to take sexual assault seriously and work to prevent it from happening on our college campuses. And to the University of Chicago, I say, good luck with the investigation, and I hope you can keep your students safe. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to refill my coffee cup – this story has left me feeling a bit drained 🙃.
