I’m sipping my coffee and trying to wrap my head around this story. The Trump administration is using national security arguments to justify some pretty interesting projects in Washington D.C. It seems they’re trying to remake parts of the city to fit the president’s vision, and that includes creating a buffer around him. Now, I’m not one to question national security, but it sounds like they’re using it as a catchall to get what they want.
The administration is planning to build a new East Wing at the White House, which will include a massive underground military installation. And let me tell you, the estimated cost is a whopping $400 million in taxpayer dollars. That’s a lot of money, if you ask me. But hey, if it’s for national security, I guess it’s worth it. They’re also planning to deploy National Guard troops in the streets of D.C. until the end of Trump’s term, which will cost an additional $1.4 billion.
Now, I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that they’re building a military complex under the East Wing or that they’re planning to turn a triumphal arch into a sniper’s nest. I mean, who needs a ballroom when you can have a military outpost, right? And what’s with the arch? It’s going to be 250 feet high and will have snipers and drones. It sounds like something out of a movie.
The press corps is also being restricted, with CNN, MS NOW, and Politico being kicked out of the White House. Trump says it’s a matter of national security, but I’m not so sure. It sounds like they’re just trying to control the narrative. And let’s not forget about the fences going up around the city. The Ellipse and Lafayette Square are closed, and there are plans to install permanent fencing around the park. It’s all starting to feel a bit like a fortress.
The Pentagon is also getting in on the action, with Trump promising a “Golden Dome” missile defense shield. That sounds like a noble pursuit, but the cost is going to be astronomical. And what’s with the plans to increase military spending by 40%? It’s a lot to take in.
As I’m reading this, I’m thinking about the history of Washington D.C. The city has been attacked before, like when the British sacked it in 1814. But it’s not like we’re in a war zone or anything. I’m just not sure what’s going on here. It all feels a bit excessive, if you ask me.
