Another lovely day on the NYC subway turns fatally awful

Another lovely day on the NYC subway turns fatally awful

I’m sitting here sipping my coffee, reading the news, and I come across a story that just makes me shake my head. An argument on a subway platform in midtown Manhattan turned deadly on Saturday, leaving one man fatally shot and train service disrupted. I mean, folks, can’t we all just get along? The shooting happened around 12:20 p.m. at the station at 7th Avenue and 53rd Street, which is just a short walk from several Broadway theaters and Carnegie Hall. You’d think that area would be safe, but I guess you never know what can happen in the city that never sleeps.

The police found an adult man with a gunshot wound to his chest, and a police spokesperson said the shooting took place on the E train platform. Apparently, the dispute involved two or three men, and it’s just shocking that things escalated to that point. I mean, what could they have been arguing about that was worth losing a life over?

Emergency crews responded and transported the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No arrests were immediately reported, and trains that normally stop at that station were bypassing the area as a police investigation took place. I can only imagine how frustrating that must have been for commuters, but I guess it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Now, I know some people might be thinking, “Oh no, the city is becoming a war zone!” But let’s keep things in perspective. Violent crime has been dropping steadily in New York City since a spike during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and deadly violence inside the subway system remains rare. In fact, through mid-October, the city was on pace to have its lowest number of killings in decades, with reported homicides down 20% from the same point last year. So, while this incident is certainly tragic, it’s not like the city is descending into chaos or anything.

As I finish my coffee and wrap up this article, I’m just left thinking about how senseless this whole thing is. A life lost over an argument, and who knows what the motive was? It’s just a sad reminder that we need to be kind to one another and try to resolve our differences peacefully. And on a lighter note, I guess this is why they say you should never talk to strangers on the subway – you never know what might happen! 😉
