Hero Teacher Admits She Was Totally Powerless

Hero Teacher Admits She Was Totally Powerless

I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest news from Bend, Oregon, where a teacher, Becky Drury, is speaking out about the horrific school shooting that occurred last week at Silver Rail Elementary. Folks, this is just heartbreaking. Drury says she never had a chance to try to shelter any of the children inside the special education classroom, which is just devastating to think about. She ran to see what was happening, but immediately saw the shooter and rushed back to the classroom, where she was shot at close range.

As I continue reading, I learn that Drury’s left hand was nearly severed by a gunshot, and her right arm was struck as well. Unable to get up or defend herself or others, she pretended to be dead in the hope the shooter wouldn’t shoot her again. It’s just incredible that she’s speaking out about this, and I can only imagine how traumatic this experience must have been for her.

The shooter, 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, blasted his way through locked doors with a shotgun and attacked the classroom, killing three children and a teacher. Another student was critically injured. It’s just mind-boggling that something like this could happen in a place that’s supposed to be safe for kids.

Apparently, some news reports had suggested that Drury threw herself on top of one student to protect her, but Drury says that’s not true. She wants to set the record straight and make sure the reporting is accurate and respectful. I can appreciate that, and I’m sure it’s not easy for her to relive this nightmare.

School reopened in the district on Wednesday for the first time since the shooting, with dozens of officers on hand to welcome children back. I can only imagine how difficult this must be for the kids and the community. The investigation is ongoing, with police serving search warrants at the attacker’s home and on his electronic devices and social media accounts.

The police have confirmed that the pump-action shotgun used in the attack had been legally purchased, but they’re still looking into how the boy obtained it. It’s just staggering to think about how this could have happened, and I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this in the coming days.

In conclusion, this is just a terrible tragedy that has left a community shaken. My thoughts are with the families of the victims and with Becky Drury, who is still recovering from her injuries. As I finish my coffee, I’m left with a sense of sadness and a hope that something can be done to prevent senseless tragedies like this from happening again. And I have to wonder, what’s the world coming to when a 5-year-old can’t even feel safe in his own classroom? 🤕
