Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. A Virginia grand jury has indicted Democratic state Sen. L. Louise Lucas and six others, including members of her family, on charges that she engaged in a racketeering conspiracy to sell marijuana and launder the proceeds. I mean, you can’t make this stuff up. An 82-year-old state senator, who’s also the president pro tempore of Virginia’s senate, allegedly running a marijuana empire? It sounds like a bad movie plot.
According to the indictment, Lucas ran several businesses that purchased and sold illegal amounts of marijuana in the state to build her family’s wealth. Now, I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure that’s not how you’re supposed to use your position as Chairwoman of the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee. FBI Director Kash Patel claims Lucas used her position to insulate her marijuana enterprise from criminal scrutiny and influenced legislation to financially benefit herself. That’s a pretty bold move, if you ask me.
Lucas is charged with crimes including racketeering conspiracy, conspiracy to possess and distribute marijuana, and conspiracy to launder money. She’s self-surrendered to law enforcement, which is probably a good idea, considering the FBI has been investigating her since earlier this year. In a statement, Lucas said the FBI and the Department of Justice are trying to silence her, but I’m not sure that’s entirely accurate. I mean, if you’re going to break the law, you should probably expect some consequences.
The indictment alleges Lucas and her co-conspirators sold and maintained illegal amounts of marijuana through her various businesses and shops. Now, I know some people might say, “But Big Elephant, marijuana is going to be legal in Virginia soon, so what’s the big deal?” Well, the big deal is that Lucas wasn’t supposed to be selling it illegally in the first place. And allegedly using her position to influence legislation and avoid scrutiny? That’s just not cool.
The state recently passed a law that will allow regulated retail marijuana sales beginning on July 1, 2027. I guess Lucas was just trying to get a head start on the competition. The indictment comes weeks before Election Day, but Lucas is not up for reelection this year, so I’m not sure what the point of all this is. Maybe someone just wanted to make a splashy headlines.
Earlier this year, FBI agents executed search warrants on two of Lucas’s marijuana shops as part of an investigation that began under President Joe Biden. According to the indictment, agents recovered marijuana and firearms from both stores. Lucas is also accused of paying $750,000 for a 100% stake in a shell holding company that prosecutors allege was created for a co-conspirator to gain a Virginia license to sell marijuana. And if that’s not enough, prosecutors allege Lucas later received a “bribery payment” from the co-conspirator for her efforts. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
The Justice Department alleged that Lucas failed to report her interest in the entity on her required Statement of Economic Interests forms as a legislator. I guess she just forgot to mention that little detail. The Justice Department also alleged that Lucas met with the co-conspirator at her office at the capitol complex to receive a partial repayment and spoke with other officials about the co-conspirator’s qualification for a recreational marijuana license depending on her receipt of a bribery payment. It’s all just a big mess, if you ask me.
In conclusion, this whole story is just a big ol’ mess. I mean, an 82-year-old state senator allegedly running a marijuana empire? It’s just crazy. And the fact that she’s been charged with all these crimes, including racketeering conspiracy and bribery? Well, that’s just the cherry on top. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up. And on that note, I’m going to go refill my coffee cup, because this story has left me shaking my head.
