Arizona Frats Keep Raising Bar On Alleged Misconduct

Arizona Frats Keep Raising Bar On Alleged Misconduct

I’m sitting here with my coffee, reading about the latest news from the University of Arizona, and I have to say, it’s just heartbreaking. A woman reported being sexually assaulted at a fraternity house, and the details are just shocking. She woke up in a bedroom with two men, one of whom was having sex with her, and she couldn’t recall giving consent. She also had a bruise on her throat and difficulty swallowing, which could be signs of strangulation. Folks, this is just devastating.

The woman had been drinking tequila with her friends at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house, and she remembered kissing one of the men earlier in the night. However, she couldn’t recall what happened next, and she woke up in a bed with the two men. She reported the incident to the campus police, and an investigation is underway. The fraternity has been placed on an activities suspension, and the memberships of the men involved have been suspended.

It’s not just this one incident that’s concerning; there have been at least 15 reported instances of rape or sexual assault at the University of Arizona since August 26. Three of those reports were made as recently as October 18 and 20. The university has been taking steps to address the issue, including suspending all 21 fraternities on campus for a week. However, some students feel that the university is not doing enough to support survivors of sexual assault.

Alyssa Norris, a senior at the university, told CNN that she was hoping the university would send out communications directing students to support resources. However, she said that there has been no sort of mass email or communication from the administration acknowledging the incident or providing resources. Another student, Allison Parker, said that she wasn’t surprised by the allegations, given the perceived culture of misconduct in fraternities on campus.

Professor Mary Koss, who researches the sexual exploitation of women, noted that sororities often don’t allow liquor in their houses, making sorority members dependent on fraternities for parties. This can leave them more vulnerable to exploitation. It’s a complex issue, but it’s clear that something needs to be done to address the culture of sexual assault on college campuses.

In conclusion, this story is just a reminder that we still have a long way to go in preventing sexual assault and supporting survivors. It’s heartbreaking to think that this could happen to anyone, and it’s essential that we take steps to create a safer and more supportive environment on college campuses. As I finish my coffee, I’m left feeling disappointed and frustrated, but also hopeful that we can create a better future for everyone. 🙏
