Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. The Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic basketball teams in the NBA, is in the middle of a family drama that’s making my head spin. It seems like Jeanie Buss, the controlling owner and CEO, is opposing the sale of the family’s remaining 17.8% stake in the team to former Disney CEO Bob Iger and venture capitalist Josh Kushner. I mean, who wouldn’t want to sell their stake in a team worth billions, right? But apparently, Jeanie is not having it.
I’m reading this article, and I’m thinking to myself, “What’s going on here?” It turns out that Iger and Kushner bought a majority stake in the club from Mark Walter for a record-breaking $12.5 billion just last week. That’s a lot of money, folks. And now, Jeanie’s attorney, Adam Streisand, is sending out letters saying that Jeanie is the controlling owner and that any vote to sell the remaining stake would be void. You can’t make this stuff up, right?
The drama is getting thicker than my morning coffee. Streisand is saying that ESPN falsely reported the sale, and that this is just another instance of Jeanie’s siblings leaking false information. Meanwhile, the Buss family is saying that they’ve decided to sell the shares, and that it’s time for them to move on. I’m getting whiplash just reading about this.
It seems like Jeanie’s siblings, Jim, Johnny, Janie, Joey, and Jesse, are all on board with selling the remaining stake, but Jeanie is not having it. She’s been the governor of the Lakers since 2013, and she’s not about to let her siblings push her around. Her attorney is threatening to take them to court if they try to push the sale through. This is getting good, folks.
I’m not sure what’s going to happen next, but I do know that the NBA’s Board of Governors still needs to approve the majority sale to Iger and Kushner. If that happens, Josh Kushner would be the controlling owner, and Bob Iger would be deeply involved in a leadership capacity. The Lakers have won 17 championships, and they’re one of the most successful teams in NBA history. I just hope they can get their family drama sorted out and focus on winning some more games.
In conclusion, the Los Angeles Lakers are in a bit of a mess right now, folks. The family drama is getting out of hand, and it’s anyone’s guess what’s going to happen next. But one thing’s for sure – it’s been entertaining to watch. As I always say, “You can’t make this stuff up.” The Lakers will hopefully get their act together and start winning some more championships. And who knows, maybe they’ll even sell some more stakes in the team and make some more billionaires happy. 🙄 Anyway, that’s all for now, folks. I’m going to go refill my coffee cup and see what other drama I can find to read about.
