He’s said things like “I’ve largely taken care of inflation,” “the prices are all coming down,” and “the prices are coming down very rapidly.” You can’t make this stuff up.
It’s not just Trump, though – some Republican midterm candidates are running commercials that acknowledge the reality of inflation, which is basically the opposite of what Trump is saying. For example, Zach Lahn, the Republican candidate for governor of Iowa, says in one ad, “On our farm here in Belle Plaine, we see it every day: gas, groceries, everything’s expensive. Iowa families are hurting.” This is quite a departure from Trump’s rosy tone on the subject.
Meanwhile, other Republican candidates are also talking about the high cost of living in their ads. Rep. Zach Nunn, another Iowa Republican, says in an ad, “Housing costs keep rising, and it’s getting harder to afford a place to live.” And Vivek Ramaswamy, the Republican candidate for governor of Ohio, features a testimonial from a woman who talks about how expensive everything is, including groceries, rent, and gas.
It’s worth noting that these messages would have fit right in four years ago, when Republicans were attacking Democrats over price hikes during the 2022 midterms. But now, with Trump in office, it’s a bit more complicated. Some Democrats are pushing back against the Republican ads, saying that they’re hypocritical given that Trump’s policies have contributed to the high cost of living.
For instance, Kylie Blitzer, the campaign spokesperson for Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, said in a statement, “While Ohioans are getting crushed by rising costs, Washington Republicans are acting like they didn’t send them the bill.” This is a pretty fair point, given that Trump’s policies, such as his tariffs, have been shown to increase the cost of living.
In any case, it’s clear that inflation is going to be a big issue in the upcoming midterms. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, but to me, it just sounds like another day in politics.
