Members of the Melvins, Butthole Surfers, Big Business, and Mr. Phylzzz have formed a new supergroup called Gatta Morta. The band is comprised of Buzz Osborne from the Melvins and Clinton Jacob from Mr. Phylzzz on guitar, JD Pinkus from Butthole Surfers on bass, and Coady Willis of Big Business on drums, with all members providing vocals. All but Jacob have been members of Melvins in various incarnations.
Buzz Osborne said of the supergroup, “It’s always a good time for the world to embrace a new heavy/weird band. I had the idea for Gatta Morta while touring last fall. I realized I needed to start a band with these three. Seemed like a no brainer. Solidly weird rock music that needs to happen.”
JD Pinkus added, “It’s been way too long since I got to write a heavy album from scratch with such high caliber players with such complimentary styles… and we’re just cat scratching the surface of what we got goin’ on!”
Debut EP and Visualizer
The band has surprise released its debut EP, Burn Witch Burn, alongside a visualizer for its lead single, “Black Hall.” The song brings to mind the doom metal-driven era of the Melvins around the time of Lysol mixed with the macro-scale heavy metal thunder of Big Business circa Here Comes the Waterworks.
The unveiling of Gatta Morta comes as the Melvins are in the midst of a North American tour with Tomahawk, with tickets available for the tour.
