I’m sipping my coffee and reading about Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general, and folks, this one is a wild ride. Blanche, President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer, has been pushing the president’s agenda since he took over as acting attorney general in April. He’s been pursuing cases against people and organizations the president has criticized, and even launched a nearly $1.8 billion plan to compensate people who believe they were wrongly targeted by the criminal justice system. But, bless their hearts, the Republicans had some concerns about his nomination, particularly regarding the “anti-weaponization fund” that was intended to benefit Trump supporters, including potentially Jan. 6 Capitol rioters.
It seems that Blanche had to do some serious damage control to get the Republicans on board with his nomination. He had to rescind the order that established the anti-weaponization fund and provide assurances that the Justice Department would not pursue any further actions related to it. And, of course, he had to meet with Epstein survivors, which they had repeatedly requested. It’s amazing what a little bit of politicking can do, isn’t it?
But, in all seriousness, Blanche’s nomination is a big deal, and it’s going to be interesting to see how he navigates the complexities of the Justice Department. He’s got a tough road ahead of him, especially with the upcoming midterm elections and the president’s longstanding accusations of widespread voter fraud. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and I can see why. The Justice Department is going to have to grapple with some tough issues, and Blanche is going to have to make some tough decisions.
It’s worth noting that Blanche has been working with senators outside the committee, including Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska. He took a two-day trip to the state earlier this month, where he met with local and tribal leaders, and the department agreed to an $180 million settlement with Anchorage over unfinished work on the port of Alaska. It’s clear that Blanche is trying to build relationships and get things done, but it’s going to be an uphill battle.
The Senate Judiciary Committee vote was a key hurdle for Blanche’s nomination, and it’s impressive that he was able to get the Republicans on board. But, as Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley said, “It’s just a crime that it took so long to work out with such a common sense thing that’s pretty simple.” Indeed, it’s surprising that it took so long to resolve the issues surrounding Blanche’s nomination.
In the end, Blanche’s nomination is a significant development, and it’s going to be interesting to see how he performs as attorney general. With the Republicans on board, he’s got a good chance of being confirmed, but he’s still got a tough road ahead of him. As I finish my coffee, I’m left wondering what’s next for Blanche and the Justice Department. One thing’s for sure, it’s going to be a wild ride, and I’m going to need a lot more coffee to keep up with it.
