Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest news from Washington, and I just can’t help but chuckle. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is pushing Congress to approve a whopping $1.5 trillion budget for the Pentagon, and he’s using the renaming of a base after the late Sen. Lindsey Graham as the perfect opportunity to make his case. I mean, who doesn’t love a good budget increase, right? The base, previously known as Joint Base Charleston, will now be called Joint Base Lindsey Graham, and I’m sure the good people of South Carolina are just thrilled.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – what’s the big deal about renaming a base? Well, it’s not just about the name change; it’s about the budget increase that comes with it. Hegseth is urging Congress to approve this massive budget, which would be a sharp increase from the $800 million approved last year. And let’s not forget the additional $150 billion that was approved in separate legislation, which President Donald Trump termed the One Big Beautiful Bill. I’m no expert, but that sounds like a lot of money to me.
Graham, a veteran and longtime Republican from South Carolina, died last month from a tear in the inner layer of his aorta. He was a strong advocate for expanding the military, and it’s no surprise that Hegseth is using his legacy to push for this budget increase. Graham joined the Air Force Reserves in 1995 and served for over 30 years, including time on active duty as a military lawyer while deployed overseas. He retired as a colonel in 2015, and his service to the country is certainly commendable.
Hegseth used the ceremony to praise Graham for spending his “final years taking on a radical leftist ideology that had run rampant in the media, in academia, and even among a few members of Congress.” I’m not sure what to make of that statement, but I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that it was made during a speech about a budget increase. Joint Base Charleston, now Joint Base Lindsey Graham, is home to the 628th Air Base Wing and supports over 90,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, civilians, and retirees. That’s a lot of people, and I’m sure they’re all eager to see what this budget increase will mean for them.
As I finish my coffee and wrap up this article, I have to say that I’m a bit amused by the whole thing. I mean, who doesn’t love a good budget battle in Washington? It’s like a never-ending soap opera, and I’m just here for the entertainment value. In all seriousness, though, the budget increase is a big deal, and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. So, let’s all just sit back, grab some popcorn, and enjoy the show – and maybe, just maybe, we’ll get a few more bases renamed after politicians in the process.
