Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump is at it again, and this time he’s not ruling out declaring a national security emergency to exert more control over the 2026 midterm elections. Because, you know, that’s exactly what we need – more drama and uncertainty in our election process. I mean, who needs stability and trust in our democratic institutions, right? Trump was interviewed by Wayne Allyn Root of Real America’s Voice, and when Root suggested that Trump could declare a national security emergency to take control of elections, Trump coyly replied, “Let me just say that stranger things have happened, OK? I’ll leave it at that.” Oh, great, just what I wanted to hear – more vague threats and hints of drastic action.
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “But Big Elephant, this is just Trump being Trump, what’s the big deal?” Well, the big deal is that this is not just some idle chatter – it’s a potential threat to our democratic process. And let’s not forget, Trump has a history of trying to mess with elections, from baselessly claiming voter fraud to challenging the results of the 2020 election, which led to a violent riot at the US Capitol. So, when he starts talking about taking control of elections, I tend to sit up and take notice.
It’s worth noting that Trump’s comments were in response to Root’s suggestion that he declare a national security emergency to implement the “SAVE America Act,” which has failed to pass in the Senate. Root claimed that if Trump declares a national security emergency, he could unilaterally implement the act, which includes provisions like photo ID, proof of citizenship, and limits on mail-in ballots. Because, you know, that’s exactly what we need – more restrictions on voting. It’s not like we have a problem with voter suppression or anything.
Now, I’m not saying that Trump’s plan would actually work – it’s far from clear that he has the authority to take over elections, and courts have consistently upheld the principle that states are in charge of elections. But still, it’s unsettling to hear him talking about it. And let’s not forget, Trump has a history of pushing the boundaries of his power and testing the limits of the Constitution. So, even if this is just a long shot, it’s still worth paying attention to.
As CNN’s Jake Tapper has noted, there are plenty of signals that Trump is trying to exert more control over elections, from his threats to have the US Postal Service not deliver mail ballots to his attempts to substantiate his baseless claims of widespread fraud. And let’s not forget, Trump has occasionally said things that suggest he wants to take control of US elections, like when he urged his party to “take over the voting in at least 15 places” and said that Republicans should “nationalize the voting.” Because, you know, that’s exactly what we need – more partisanship and polarization in our election process.
In conclusion, folks, this is just another example of Trump being Trump – unpredictable, provocative, and potentially threatening to our democratic institutions. So, let’s all just take a deep breath and remember that this is just a guy who likes to stir up controversy and get attention. But still, it’s worth keeping an eye on, because you never know what he might do next.
