Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest move from the Trump administration, and I have to say, it’s a doozy. They’re planning to revoke visas from potentially hundreds of thousands of foreigners who came to the US on temporary visas and then sought asylum. I mean, who doesn’t love a good game of “asylum seeker limbo”?
The Trump administration is going after people who came to the US on temporary visas for reasons like tourism or business and then sought asylum to remain in the country long term. Because, you know, that’s not what temporary visas are for. It’s like they’re trying to prevent immigrants from coming to the US and removing those who are already here. I guess that’s one way to make America great again.
A source familiar with the matter said that the action could impact 200,000 foreigners, but don’t worry, it won’t be done all at once. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said that the revocations will be done on a rolling basis, so it’s not like they’re trying to create a panic or anything. He also said that the State Department is coordinating with the Department of Homeland Security to identify and revoke the nonimmigrant visas of foreigners who have come to the US claiming to be short-term visitors, but then file for asylum to stay here permanently. Because, you know, that’s just not fair.
Pigott also said that obtaining a visa in order to seek asylum is fraud, which is grounds for visa revocation. I mean, who knew? To seek asylum, a person must be physically present in the US and be fleeing political, racial, or religious persecution in their home country. But hey, if you’re just looking for a way to stay in the US permanently, maybe try winning the lottery or something.
CNN reported in April that applicants for visas to the US would have to affirm that they do not fear persecution in their home countries. Because, you know, that’s a totally reasonable thing to ask. The directive from the State Department instructed consular officers to ask nonimmigrant visa applicants two questions: “Have you experienced harm or mistreatment in your country of nationality or last habitual residence?” and “Do you fear harm or mistreatment in returning to your country of nationality or permanent residence?” And if you answer “yes” to either of those questions, well, you’re not getting a visa.
The State Department announced earlier this month that it had revoked more than 175,000 visas since President Donald Trump began his second term. I guess that’s what they mean by “making America great again.” Anyway, it’s been fun watching the Trump administration try to navigate the whole immigration thing. It’s like they’re trying to solve a puzzle blindfolded while being attacked by a swarm of bees. In conclusion, the Trump administration is trying to revoke visas from hundreds of thousands of foreigners, and it’s all just a big mess. But hey, at least it’s not boring, right? 🙄
