Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest news from New York, where Gov. Kathy Hochul has just signed an executive order appointing State Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor in the Cornell University alleged gang rape case. I mean, you can’t make this stuff up – the drama, the controversy, the whole shebang. Apparently, Hochul thinks the local district attorney, Matthew Van Houten, can’t handle the case without being biased or something. I’m not sure what’s going on in Tompkins County, but it sounds like a real mess.
So, it seems that Van Houten’s office declined to prosecute the case without even talking to the victim, Jane Doe. That’s just bizarre. And to make matters worse, they relied on a partial account of her statement to the Cornell University Police Department. I mean, come on, folks, that’s just sloppy. The order from Hochul’s office highlights all this and more, saying that Van Houten’s actions have “undercut my faith, and the public’s faith, in the District Attorney’s ability to effectively investigate and prosecute the case at this time.” Yeah, no kidding.
Now, I’m not a lawyer or anything, but it seems to me that if you’re going to decline to prosecute a rape case, you should at least talk to the victim first. I mean, that’s just basic human decency, right? But I guess that’s not how they do things in Tompkins County. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now it’s all over CNN. I’m just shaking my head, folks.
It’s worth noting that the order from Hochul’s office goes into some detail about what went wrong in this case. Apparently, the district attorney’s office relied on a partial account of Jane Doe’s statement, which omitted some pretty important details. Like, for example, her assertion that she had been sexually assaulted. You’d think that would be kind of a key point, but I guess not.
Anyway, it looks like Letitia James is going to take over the case now, and I hope she can get to the bottom of things. This whole situation is just a mess, and I feel for the victim, Jane Doe. I hope she gets the justice she deserves. And as for Matthew Van Houten, well… bless his heart. In the end, it’s just another day in the wild world of politics and law enforcement, folks. You’ve got to stay on your toes and keep your coffee mug full, because you never know what’s going to happen next. 😂
