Oh boy, you guys, it’s finally happening! 🎉 Steven Wilson and Mikael Åkerfeldt are working on a new STORM CORROSION album, because apparently, we didn’t have enough experimental, psychedelic, chamber folk music in our lives. I mean, who needs sanity when you can have two musical geniuses pushing the boundaries of sound and making our brains hurt in the best way possible? 🤯
So, what’s the deal with this new album? Well, according to Wilson, it’s going to be “very different” from their 2012 debut, but still have that recognizable STORM CORROSION aesthetic. Because, you know, they wouldn’t want to make it too easy for us to understand what’s going on. 😂 Wilson also mentioned that the new album will feature a lot of acoustic instruments, because who needs electricity when you can have strings and woodwinds, right? 🎻
But seriously, folks, this is exciting news. Wilson and Åkerfeldt are two of the most innovative and daring musicians out there, and their collaboration is always a treat. As Wilson said, “It’s funny, I saw a couple of people reviewing the playback events we did for ‘Requiem For A Village’, and more than a few of them mentioned how it reminded them a little bit of the STORM CORROSION record — the first one, of course, they would’ve been referring to.” Yeah, because that’s exactly what we need, more music that sounds like STORM CORROSION. Said no one ever. 😜
The Story So Far
For those who may have missed it, STORM CORROSION is a collaborative project between Wilson and Åkerfeldt, which released its debut album in 2012 to critical acclaim and confusion. The album was a love letter to the esoteric and abstruse sounds of the past, crossing the mystifying noises of late ’60s/early ’70s German groups like TANGERINE DREAM and POPOL VUH with the sound of British folk heroes like NICK DRAKE and BERT JANSCH. Because, why not? 🤷♂️
As Wilson recalled, “We’d talked many times over the years about doing a project with just the two of us. In 2011 we quietly got together for a week at my studio, and started to make music, not knowing where it would take us, but knowing that the last thing we wanted to do was the obvious.” And obvious it was not. The resulting album was a masterpiece of experimental music, with songs that sounded like they were recorded in a haunted mansion by a bunch of eccentric millionaires. 🎃
What’s Next?
So, what can we expect from the new STORM CORROSION album? Well, Wilson said it’s going to be “a massive chunk of music,” which is just great. Because we all need more music that’s longer than a sitcom episode. 📺 But seriously, folks, this is going to be a wild ride. With Wilson and Åkerfeldt at the helm, we can expect nothing but the unexpected. As Åkerfeldt said, “It’s strange and crazy in many ways. This record has got something. It’s quite unique.” Yeah, no kidding. 🤪
In conclusion, the new STORM CORROSION album is coming, and we should all be excited and terrified at the same time. Because, let’s face it, these two guys are musical geniuses, and they’re going to push the boundaries of sound and our sanity. But hey, that’s what makes life worth living, right? 🎉 So, buckle up, folks, and get ready for the wildest musical ride of your life. 🎢
