Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest shenanigans from former Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, and let me tell you, it’s a doozy. According to an independent investigation by the Labor Department, Chavez-DeRemer violated department policy by drinking alcohol at the office and telling her staff to perform personal tasks for her. I mean, who needs a personal assistant when you have taxpayer-funded staff, right? The report also found that she accepted expensive gifts without proper notification, combined personal and official travel, and had an “inappropriately close” relationship with a supervisor in her security detail. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now it’s all over CNN.
The report published by the department’s Office of Inspector General is scathing, to say the least. It found that Chavez-DeRemer instructed an aide to use a department vehicle to go to her house to “hang her laundry and dry cleaning and organize her clothing, shoes, and purses.” Because, you know, that’s what taxpayers are paying for. She also directed staff to buy alcohol and other personal items for her, including asking an aide during a work trip “to purchase wine for her at her hotel.” I guess that’s one way to get a good wine recommendation.
The gifts Chavez-DeRemer did not properly disclose include tickets to a rodeo from a lobbyist, an alligator-hide wallet gifted during a trip to Springfield, Louisiana, and two cowboy hats gifted during an America First Policy Institute event in Palm Beach, Florida. Because who doesn’t love a good cowboy hat? The inspector general said that these gifts were not properly disclosed, and I’m sure it’s just an honest mistake. Bless their hearts.
Chavez-DeRemer’s trip to Palm Beach in November 2025 is also under scrutiny. She stayed three nights at a luxury hotel and spa with a nightly rate of $529, excluding taxes, and was reimbursed over $2,000 for the trip. I’m no math expert, but that sounds like a lot of money for a work trip. The report found that she combined personal and business travel, like adding an official visit to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Portland to her schedule, despite planning to go to the city for personal reasons. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
The investigation “established that official travel authorities were used on multiple occasions to support travel that also served personal interests,” the report says. Overall, it “concluded that Chavez-DeRemer’s conduct was inconsistent with applicable standards.” I’m shocked. Before serving as Labor secretary, Chavez-DeRemer was elected in 2022 to represent Oregon’s 5th Congressional District in Congress. She only served for one term, as she lost her reelection bid in 2024.
During her short tenure in the House, Chavez-DeRemer established herself as one of the most labor-friendly Republicans in Washington. She was one of the few GOP co-sponsors of a bill that would make it easier for workers to unionize. After Chavez-DeRemer’s departure from the Labor Department, Keith Sonderling was appointed as acting secretary. I’m sure he’s doing a great job, but I’m still trying to figure out what exactly happened during Chavez-DeRemer’s tenure.
In conclusion, the report on Lori Chavez-DeRemer’s tenure as Labor Secretary is a wild ride, full of alcohol, gifts, and luxury hotels. It’s a good thing she’s no longer in office, or who knows what other creative ways she would have found to use taxpayer money.
