I’m sipping my coffee and reading the latest news from CNN, and folks, it looks like we’ve got a real barnburner of an election shaping up in New Hampshire. Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas is going to face off against Republican former Sen. John E. Sununu in the race for the state’s open Senate seat. This one’s going to be a doozy, and I’m not just saying that because I love a good underdog story. The battle for retiring Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s seat could be crucial to the Democrats’ hopes of flipping the chamber in November.
The Republican Senate race was interesting, to say the least. Sununu, who’s a member of New Hampshire’s most established Republican family, managed to defeat Scott Brown, the former Massachusetts senator and Trump ambassador who was running as an outsider. And get this – Sununu had previously described Trump as a “loser” in an op-ed, but still managed to secure Trump’s endorsement. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
On the Democratic side, Pappas, a four-term congressman from a battleground House district, defeated Karishma Manzur, a democratic socialist who was trying to pull off an upset. Pappas focused on affordability concerns and defended safety-net programs, which seemed to resonate with voters. He also got a boost from about $4.8 million in outside spending, according to AdImpact data.
Meanwhile, in the governor’s race, Republican Kelly Ayotte is looking to get reelected, and she’s campaigning on tougher public safety policies and expanding affordable housing. She’s also got a bit of a rocky relationship with the state legislature, despite being from the same party. And on the Democratic side, Cinde Warmington is running unopposed, but she’s already facing criticism from Republicans who are trying to tie her to the opioid crisis.
In other news, Trump-backed candidate Anthony DiLorenzo won the Republican primary in New Hampshire’s 1st District. He’s a first-time candidate who’s been funneling his own money into the campaign, and he’s got the support of key GOP House leadership. This one could be a tough race for Democrat Chris Pappas, who’s represented the seat since 2019.
And finally, Stefany Shaheen, the daughter of New Hampshire’s senior senator, is running for the Democratic nomination in a crowded field. This one’s going to be interesting to watch, folks.
