Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump and his team are having a big discussion about whether to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter. I mean, who wouldn’t want to watch a firing squad execution on their morning commute, right? According to CNN, Trump was not initially aware that Hasan was paralyzed from the waist down, which is a pretty important detail. The president has been defended the decision to execute Hasan via firing squad, but now he’s not so sure about the whole livestream thing.
I guess it’s understandable that Trump wouldn’t know every detail about Hasan’s condition, but you’d think someone would’ve mentioned it to him before now. Anyway, Trump has been talking to his advisers about what to do, and some of them are saying that livestreaming the execution could be a propaganda opportunity for terrorist groups. That’s definitely a valid concern, and I can see why Trump might be hesitant.
It’s also interesting to note that the Pentagon is reevaluating its plans to livestream the execution, and it might not happen after all. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had initially recommended death by firing squad for Hasan, and Trump approved it, but now it seems like there are some second thoughts. I mean, who can blame them? This whole thing is a big mess, and it’s hard to see how livestreaming the execution would do anything to help.
The execution is scheduled for December 3 at Fort Hood, and it would be the US Army’s first execution of a soldier since World War II. That’s a pretty big deal, and I can see why there’s so much controversy surrounding it. Hasan, who is a US-born citizen of Palestinian descent, said he was targeting soldiers he was set to deploy with to Afghanistan and wanted to protect the Taliban and its leaders from the US military. It’s a pretty horrific crime, and I can understand why some people might want to see justice served.
But, oh boy, the idea of livestreaming the execution is just crazy. I mean, can you imagine the headlines? “Execution of Fort Hood Shooter to be Livestreamed on YouTube”? It’s just too much. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded like a great idea, but I’m not so sure. It’s just a bad idea all around, and I’m glad Trump is reconsidering.
The plan to livestream the execution has faced bipartisan backlash, and people across the Pentagon and the Army were caught off guard. It’s not hard to see why – this is a pretty sensitive topic, and it’s not something that should be taken lightly. Trump told reporters that he was not involved in the decision, but he understands why some people might want to make an example out of Hasan.
In the end, it’s up to Trump to decide what to do, and I’m not sure what he’ll choose. But, I do know that livestreaming the execution is a bad idea, and I’m glad it’s being reconsidered. It’s just not something that should be done, and I think we can all agree on that. And, who knows, maybe Trump will surprise us all and come up with a better solution. But, until then, I’ll just be over here, sipping my coffee and shaking my head at the whole thing. The whole situation is just a big mess, and I’m not sure how it’s all going to play out. But, one thing’s for sure, it’ll be interesting to watch.
