Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one – two of Trump’s top political advisers, James Blair and Chris LaCivita, have donated their earnings from a recent stint in the Balkans to the Trump Presidential Library. Because, you know, that’s exactly what presidential libraries are for – to receive donations from people who worked for the president. I mean, it’s not like the library is going to be a big, flashy monument to Trump’s ego or anything. According to CNN, Blair and LaCivita worked on behalf of a pro-Russian government in the Balkans, which is just a totally normal and not-at-all-suspicious thing for Trump’s advisers to be doing.
You can’t make this stuff up – Blair actually posted on X, saying “Yes, it’s true we donated our full fee. I love the President and am eternally grateful for the opportunities he has provided me. Contributing to the preservation of his legacy of greatness is my honor!” And LaCivita also confirmed the donation, saying “Preserving the legacy and story of @realDonaldTrump is an honor and a no brainer!” I guess it’s nice that they’re so devoted to Trump, but it’s also a little creepy. Bless their hearts.
Earlier this month, Trump said he would fire Blair and LaCivita if their outside work presented a conflict of interest. But I guess donating to his presidential library doesn’t count as a conflict, because that’s just a totally normal and ethical thing to do. Trump wrote at the time, “They are allowed to do work for others, just like all consultants in Washington, D.C. I do not have any idea who else they work for but will, on reflection, ask them and, if there’s a conflict, I will terminate them, immediately!” Yeah, sure, because that’s exactly how it works – you just ask your advisers who they’re working for, and if it’s a conflict, you fire them. Simple as that.
The New York Times reported that Blair and LaCivita traveled to the Balkans ahead of the country’s elections, and were paid hundreds of thousands of dollars each through a Washington-based law firm. And now they’re donating that money to Trump’s library. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now it’s all over CNN. The exact amount of the donation is unclear, but I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that it’s not being disclosed.
CNN has reached out to the White House for comment, but I’m sure they’ll just say something about how this is all totally normal and not a big deal. Because, you know, it’s not like Trump’s advisers are trying to curry favor with him or anything. CNN previously reported that Trump was “pissed” by the Times report, according to a veteran Republican who is in touch with the president. But I’m sure he’s just fine with the donation to his library.
Blair leads Trump’s super PAC, MAGA Inc., and has been tasked with heading up the president’s midterm elections strategy. LaCivita is a senior adviser at MAGA Inc. So, you know, it’s not like they have any influence or power or anything. They’re just a couple of guys who happen to work for Trump and also happen to be donating to his library. Totally normal.
In conclusion, this whole thing is just a big mess. Trump’s advisers are donating to his library, and everyone’s just pretending like it’s no big deal. But hey, at least we can all have a good laugh about it. I mean, who needs ethics and transparency in government when you can just have a big, flashy presidential library? 🙄
