Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. It seems that some schools in Omaha, Nebraska, have been using electric shock gloves on students, and parents are not happy about it. The devices, known as G.L.O.V.E.s, deliver an electric shock to gain compliance and have been used at least five times on students across the city since 2022. I can understand why parents would be concerned – who wants their kid to get zapped at school? California has already banned these things, and it’s surprising to see them being used in schools.
The story gets even more interesting when you hear that the school resource officers have been using these gloves without informing parents or teachers. One mom, Katy Eilers, said her son is scared of getting shocked, and she’s worried about the potential harm it could cause, especially since her son has a heart defect. Bless their hearts, these parents are fighting to get these gloves out of schools, and I don’t blame them one bit.
It’s worth noting that the manufacturer of the G.L.O.V.E. says it’s safe and effective, but some experts are questioning its use on children, especially those with special needs. John Stuck, a law enforcement veteran, says the gloves are a useful addition to other tools carried by school resource officers, but I’m not convinced. You can’t make this stuff up – the idea of using electric shock gloves on kids is just crazy.
The Omaha Public Schools Superintendent, Matthew Ray, has banned the use of these gloves, but the Millard school district is still using them. The superintendent, John Schwartz, says removing the gloves would take away a useful tool for officers, but I think he’s missing the point. The point is that these gloves are being used on children, and that’s just not right.
Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’re talking about it. The use of shock gloves has strained relationships between law enforcement and the community, and it’s no wonder. Who wants to see kids getting shocked at school? It’s just not the kind of thing you expect to happen in a civilized society.
In the end, it’s up to the parents and the community to decide what’s best for their kids. If they don’t want these gloves used in schools, then that’s what should happen. It’s not rocket science – just use some common sense and compassion. As one mom said, “We need to learn how to communicate and resolve our issues, and the way to teach a child to do that is not to shock them into compliance.” Amen to that. And let’s hope that someday soon, these shock gloves will be a thing of the past, and we can all have a good laugh about how crazy it was to even think about using them on kids.
