Bless their hearts, it seems like they thought they were above the law. The SPLC has fought the case, arguing that the government is mischaracterizing a long-standing informant program designed to gather intelligence on hate groups.
The charges against Beirich include wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to submit false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to conceal money laundering. It’s worth noting that the person with whom Beirich had a romantic relationship was paid over $1 million by the SPLC since 2007 and shared a bank account with Beirich that contained $140,000 from those payments. That’s a lot of money, if you ask me.

While that may be true, it doesn’t excuse the alleged misconduct of Beirich and others involved in the payments. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this story sounded like a movie plot, and now it’s all over the news.
