I’m sitting here with my coffee, reading about President Donald Trump’s latest nomination, and I have to say, it’s a doozy. He’s nominated acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao for the permanent position, and I’m not sure what to make of it. Cao, a former GOP Senate candidate, has some interesting views on the US military, saying it needs “alpha males and alpha females” to win wars. I mean, who doesn’t love a good underdog story, right? But seriously, this guy’s got some serious credentials, having served as a Navy captain and undersecretary, and even running for Congress in Virginia back in 2022.
So, Trump’s nomination of Cao is making waves, and I’m not surprised. The President’s been known to make some… let’s call them “interesting” choices, and this one’s no exception. Cao’s got a lot of experience, don’t get me wrong, but some of his comments during his Senate run have raised a few eyebrows. Like that time he said the military needs “alpha males and alpha females” who can “rip out their own guts, eat ’em and ask for seconds.” Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the idea. He’s a bit of a character, to say the least.
Now, I know some folks might be thinking, “What’s the big deal? He’s just a Navy secretary.” But let me tell you, this guy’s got some serious influence. He’s been serving in the top civilian role in an acting capacity since the previous secretary, John Phelan, got the boot back in April. And with Cao’s portfolio including recruitment and personnel policy, he’s got a lot of say in how the Navy operates. Not to mention his role in implementing Trump’s executive order to reinstate service members who were discharged over the Covid-19 vaccine mandate. That’s a pretty big deal, if you ask me.
Cao’s also got some personal experience that’s relevant to his new role. His family came to the US as refugees after fleeing the Vietnam war, and he’s been serving in the Navy for over three decades. He’s worked as a Navy diver, explosive ordnance disposal officer, and even had a stint at the Pentagon working on budgets and acquisitions. So, he’s definitely got the chops for the job.
But, as with any nomination, there’s bound to be some controversy. Cao’s previous comments have been criticized by some, and his relationship with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been a bit rocky, to say the least. And let’s not forget the fact that Cao was often cut out of decision-making by his boss, Phelan, during his tenure as undersecretary. That’s not exactly the kind of thing you want to hear about a guy who’s about to take on a major leadership role.
All in all, it’ll be interesting to see how this nomination plays out. The Senate’s got a lot to consider, and with Republicans holding a razor-thin majority, it’s anyone’s guess how it’ll go down. But hey, at least it’s not boring, right? Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer is probably thinking, “This is going to be great TV!” And who knows, maybe Cao will surprise us all and turn out to be a fantastic Navy secretary. Stranger things have happened, right?
In conclusion, Trump’s nomination of Hung Cao as Navy secretary is a bit of a wild card, but it’s definitely got people talking. With Cao’s experience and credentials, he’s got a good shot at making it through the Senate, but it’s not going to be a cakewalk. And hey, even if it’s not the most conventional choice, at least it’s not boring. So, I’ll be sitting here with my coffee, watching this whole thing play out, and probably laughing at the absurdity of it all. After all, as they say, “you can’t make this stuff up”!
