Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about Elon Musk’s super PAC, and I’ve got to say, this is getting interesting. According to the latest filings, America PAC has disclosed its first spending on behalf of Republican candidates, totaling around $800,000 to help congressional contenders across several states. I mean, that’s a pretty penny, if you ask me. Musk’s political operation seems to be focused on direct voter outreach, covering printing costs and whatnot. I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the amount of money being thrown around or the fact that someone still uses print media.
The expenditures, made in August and disclosed on Wednesday night to the Federal Election Commission, include help for candidates competing in high-profile Senate races from Maine to Texas. Now, I’m no expert, but it seems like Musk is trying to make a splash in the political arena. And, boy, is he making a splash. The largest share of the newly disclosed spending, more than $247,000, went to aid Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general who has been vastly outspent on the airwaves by Texas’ Democratic nominee James Talarico.
I’ve been following this story, and it’s fascinating to see how America PAC’s feed on X has targeted Talarico, arguing that his views are out of touch with Texas voters. I mean, it’s not like they’re being subtle about it or anything. Musk, the world’s richest person, is already one of the biggest funders in the midterm elections, plowing more than $50 million into his America PAC and donating $10 million each to the main Republican super PACs active in House and Senate races. He’s also given $10 million to a super PAC active in Kentucky’s Senate race. That’s a whole lot of cash, if you ask me.
Other races where America PAC has made early investments include Senate contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan, and Ohio, as well as key House races in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. It’s like they’re trying to cover all their bases or something. The activity marks a reengagement in Republican politics for Musk more than a year after he publicly bickered with President Donald Trump. I guess you could say they’ve kissed and made up, or at least, Musk has decided to play nice again.
The PAC has committed to helping Republicans retain their House and Senate majorities in November’s midterm elections, spending both to defend Republican-held seats and pick up districts now held by Democrats, according to a source familiar with the committee’s plans. I’m not sure what the outcome will be, but one thing’s for sure – it’s going to be an interesting few months. And, as I finish my coffee, I’ve got to say, it’s been entertaining watching Musk throw his weight around in the political arena. I mean, who needs a soap opera when you have politics, right? 💸
