Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. It seems like President Donald Trump is going against the grain, yet again, by embracing data centers. Lawmakers and candidates from both parties are criticizing the proliferation of these centers, but Trump is bear-hugging them, claiming they’re vital to competing with China on artificial intelligence and will bring jobs and economic growth to communities. Bless their hearts, it’s like they think the rest of us are just going to roll over and accept these massive structures in our backyards.
You can’t make this stuff up – Trump is calling data centers “big, strong, bold, and Money Machines” and “Cash Cows, with Lower Taxes and Record Setting Jobs.” He’s even gone so far as to criticize Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul for signing an executive order halting the construction of new data centers. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a full-blown controversy on our hands.
But here’s the thing: the American people really don’t like data centers. According to a Reuters-Ipsos poll, Americans opposed the construction of new data centers 45%-16%. And when it comes to building them in their communities, the margin against grows to 59%-10%. It’s almost like there’s a campaign against data centers, and Trump is the lone wolf trying to convince us they’re a good thing.
The passion is clearly on the side of the critics, with only 3% to 7% strongly supporting the construction of data centers in their areas. Meanwhile, between 44% to 48% strongly oppose them. It’s a bipartisan issue, with Republicans and Democrats alike speaking out against data centers. Even in deep red states, bills banning data center construction have been proposed.
Despite Trump’s claims, Americans just don’t seem to think data centers are a good idea. They’re worried about the costs, the environmental impact, and the strain on local resources. And with the midterm elections looming, it’s no wonder that candidates from both parties are jumping on the anti-data center bandwagon.
In conclusion, it’s clear that Trump is out of touch with the American people on this issue. Data centers may be a boon for tech companies and investors, but for the rest of us, they’re a nuisance at best.
