Cop Who Mistook Apartment Gets Early Get Out of Jail Free Card

I’m sipping my coffee and reading about Amber Guyger, the Dallas police officer who was convicted of killing a Black man, Botham Jean, in his own apartment. She thought it was her own apartment, which is just mind-boggling. Anyway, she’s been granted parole after serving seven years of her 10-year sentence. I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that she got parole or that she only got 10 years in the first place. I mean, she killed a guy in his own home, and now she’s getting out early. Folks, this is some crazy stuff.

The Texas Board of Pardons and Parole, which is appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott, rejected Guyger’s initial parole request in 2024, but approved her case this time around, despite the objections of Jean’s family. I can understand why the family would be upset – I would be too if I were in their shoes. Guyger was convicted of murder in 2018, and the whole case was just a mess from the start. She walked into Jean’s apartment, thought he was an intruder, and shot him. It’s just tragic.

The shooting drew a lot of attention because of the weird circumstances, and it was one of those cases that made you go “huh?” You can’t make this stuff up, right? Guyger’s sentencing hearing was also pretty dramatic, with Jean’s brother and the judge embracing her in court. I’m not sure what to make of that, but I guess it’s just one of those moments that shows you that people are complex and can be surprising.

At trial, Guyger said she thought Jean’s apartment was her own, which is just a ridiculous mistake. I mean, who does that? She said she was tired and still in uniform, but that’s no excuse for killing someone. Civil rights attorney Lee Merritt said Jean’s family “strongly opposed” Guyger’s parole, and I don’t blame them one bit. Merritt said the family stood up again and again to ask that Guyger serve her full sentence, and I think that’s reasonable.

In 2024, a jury ordered Guyger to pay Jean’s family nearly $100 million in a federal civil trial. That’s a lot of money, but I’m not sure it brings back the person they lost. The board that granted Guyger’s parole said they reviewed a “plethora” of information in her case, and I’m sure they did. They said she didn’t have a history of violence, and she completed some programs in prison to help her get a job when she’s released. Okay, that’s all well and good, but it doesn’t change the fact that she killed someone.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice will determine when Guyger is released, and I’m sure that will be a big deal. The Dallas police department said they had no role in Guyger’s parole request or the decision to release her, which is probably a good thing. They also said their thoughts remain with the Jean family, which is the least they can do.

In conclusion, this whole case is just a mess, and I’m not sure what to make of it. Guyger killed a guy in his own apartment, served seven years, and now she’s getting out. It’s just crazy. I’m sure the Jean family is still hurting, and I don’t blame them one bit. As I finish my coffee, I’m just shaking my head at the whole thing – it’s just a tragic reminder that the justice system is flawed, and sometimes people don’t get the justice they deserve. And with that, I’m done with this story – time to move on to the next crazy news item!
