Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about President Donald Trump sharing another fake quote on social media, and I just can’t help but shake my head. This time, it’s a fabricated comment supposedly from Denzel Washington, praising Trump as the bravest, smartest, and most caring person he’s ever met. I mean, come on, who makes this stuff up? The quote has been previously wrongly attributed to other celebrities like Mick Jagger and Matthew McConaughey, according to Snopes. You can’t make this stuff up, right?
I’m looking at the fact-checking website Snopes, and they’re reporting that this phony quote has been circulating online for years, with fictitious claims about Washington publicly declaring himself a Trump supporter. But, of course, Washington has generally kept a low political profile, and federal records show he’s made donations to support Democratic presidential candidates like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Bless their hearts, trying to spin this as if Denzel Washington is a secret Trump fan.
Trump has a history of using his social media accounts to spread false claims and conspiracy theories, including imaginary quotes. In 2019, he shared a glowing but fake quote about himself that an obscure account had wrongly attributed to former President Ronald Reagan. And this spring, he shared a fake quote attacking Obama that a pro-Trump commentator had wrongly attributed to Republican Sen. John Kennedy. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now it’s all over the news.
The fake praise was posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform, and it was an image of a Saturday post made by a pro-Trump X account called “Red Eagle Updates.” The post said “BOOM,” and then quoted Washington as supposedly saying that Trump is a great friend and an even better president. I’m proud to be a steadfast supporter, and I’ll never apologize for it, the fake quote reads. Media outlets like MeidasTouch and Mediaite were quick to point out that the supposed quote was fake, and Alan Nierob, a representative for Washington, confirmed that the quote was “not real” and said he had “no idea where it came from.”
It’s just amazing to me how these fake quotes keep popping up, and Trump keeps sharing them without fact-checking. I guess that’s just the world we live in now, where social media can spread misinformation like wildfire. As I finish my coffee, I’m left wondering what’s next in this wild world of politics. Will we see more fake quotes from celebrities, or will someone finally fact-check before sharing? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – I’ll be here, sipping my coffee and shaking my head at the latest news. 🙄
