Poly Fighter flexes with random power-ups in shaky Early Access debut

Poly Fighter flexes with random power-ups in shaky Early Access debut

Poly Fighter is the latest game to enter the ring, and I’ve got to say, it’s a bit of a wild card. As a gaming veteran who’s seen it all, from the glory days of Street Fighter 2 to the current live-service trends, I approached this game with a mix of excitement and skepticism. After all, the concept of a fighting roguelike sounds like a match made in heaven, but we all know how that can turn out – just look at the plethora of “innovative” battle royale games that have flooded the market. But I digress. Poly Fighter’s central hook – a tournament fighting roguelike – genuinely intrigued me, and I was eager to see if it could deliver on its promise.

As I dove into the game, I was struck by its unique blend of genres. It’s not every day you see a fighting game and a roguelike copulating like teenagers in a bad 80s movie, but somehow, it works. The game’s ability to challenge me to constantly think about the next fight, all while providing opportunities to change my playstyle or choose options that may give me an edge in battle, was genuinely engaging. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love the idea of stealing moves from defeated opponents like a fighting game equivalent of a Pokémon?

The Good, the Bad, and the RNG

One of the things that sets Poly Fighter apart from other fighting games is its lack of complexity. Players don’t need to consider stat upgrades or complex RPG elements in how they construct their fighter, which is good for onboarding new or inexperienced players. However, this also means that the game can feel a bit simplistic at times, with not enough options to deepen its unique mechanics. I mean, come on, a fighting game without a six-button control scheme? It’s like playing a guitar with only three strings. And don’t even get me started on the input lag – it’s like the game is trying to eat my inputs like a hungry Pac-Man.

Aesthetic Appeal

But where Poly Fighter truly shines is in its aesthetics. The high-definition models and detailed lighting, combined with the low-poly square-shading effect and detailing, make the characters look almost like action figures in a really interesting, fun way. And the use of bright colors and flashy particle effects gives the game a 90s aesthetic that’s hard not to fall in love with. It’s like someone took all the best parts of a PSX-era fighting game and mashed them together with modern graphics, creating a visual spectacle that’s equal parts beautiful and baffling.

Room for Improvement

Since Poly Fighter is still in Early Access, it has plenty of room to grow and get even more interesting. Heartloop Games has laid the foundation for something special, and with the right tweaks, it could become a true contender in the world of fighting games. I just hope they’re receptive to player feedback and don’t try to cram in too many “live-service” features or season passes – we all know how that can turn out. After all, I’m still waiting for my refund from that one game that promised the world and delivered a half-baked experience with a side of microtransactions.

In conclusion, Poly Fighter is a game that’s full of potential, but also full of potential pitfalls. Will it become the next big thing in fighting games, or will it succumb to the pitfalls of live-service trends and monetization? Only time will tell, but for now, it’s a fun and quirky game that’s worth keeping an eye on. And who knows, maybe it’ll even inspire a new wave of fighting game innovation – or at the very least, a few decent memes.
