It’s that time of year again: the annual ritual of buying a slightly updated version of the same sports game we’ve been playing for years. And I’m not even being sarcastic, I’m actually excited. This year’s iteration, EA SPORTS FC 27, promises to bring some much-needed changes to the table, and I got to spend a couple of days at the EA Vancouver campus to see what they’ve been cooking up. Spoiler alert: it’s looking pretty promising.
THE GROUNDS
One of the most interesting new features in EA SPORTS FC 27 is The Grounds, a small-scale open world where you can compete in smaller matches, play other modes, and customize your player to your heart’s content. It’s like a football-themed playground, and I loved my time with it. I wrote a separate piece about it, because let’s be real, it’s a big deal. The Grounds is going to be a game-changer, and I’m not just saying that because I got to play it before everyone else.
GAMEPLAY
The developers at EA have been listening to player feedback, and it shows. Several areas of the gameplay have been improved or completely revamped. Corner kicks, for example, are now more interactive, allowing you to choose the target area, power, and angle of the kick. You can even manually control the players in the box, making it feel more like a real match. And with the new Avoidance feature, you can make your players more evasive, which is super useful in those crowded penalty areas.
But that’s not all – Attacking Spatial Awareness has also gotten a significant update. AI-controlled players are now more aware of their surroundings, making smarter runs and creating more passing options. It’s like they’re actually trying to win the game, not just running around like headless chickens. And with the new Triggered Curved Runs and Pass & Follow Runs, you have even more control over your players’ movements. It’s a lot to take in, but trust me, it’s worth it.
CAREER MODE
Manager Career mode has also seen some significant updates, including a new feature called Dynamic OVR. It affects every player on your team, changing their overall rating based on recent match form, happiness, morale, fitness, and availability. It’s like they’re actually human beings, not just stats on a screen. And the transfer market has been updated with smarter AI decision-making, new cutscenes, and a more realistic transfer process. You can even build, publish, and share your own Manager Career scenarios with the new Creator Challenges feature. It’s like they’re trying to make the game feel more immersive or something.
ULTIMATE TEAM
And then there’s Ultimate Team, which has a couple of new features that are sure to excite fans. The FUT Gallery is a collection-based section where you can collect players based on different themes, and the Streamlined SBCs make it easier to complete Squad-Building Challenges without having to worry about position or chemistry requirements. It’s like they’re trying to make the game more accessible to new players or something. And with the new rewards system, you can earn cosmetics, Gallery tokens, and even Holographic versions of player cards. Because who doesn’t want a holographic Cristiano Ronaldo?
In conclusion, EA SPORTS FC 27 is shaping up to be a solid update to the series. With its new features, improved gameplay, and updated modes, it’s sure to please both new and veteran players. And who knows, maybe this year’s version will actually be worth buying. EA SPORTS FC 27 releases on September 25th, 2026, with Early Access opening on September 18. Pre-orders are available now, because of course they are.
