Folks, I’m sitting here sipping my coffee, reading about President Trump’s latest antics, and I just can’t help but chuckle. Apparently, he’s threatening to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” due to the ongoing trade war with Canada. I mean, who needs international diplomacy when you can just rename a lake, right? According to Trump, the US is “giving serious consideration” to this name change, and he even took to Truth Social to announce it, saying “The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer.”
It seems like Trump is trying to make a point about the trade tensions between the US and Canada, but renaming a lake might not be the most effective way to do so. I mean, Lake Ontario is the smallest of the five Great Lakes by surface area, separating the state of New York from Ontario, Canada. It’s not like it’s a tiny pond that can be easily renamed.
Trump’s latest jab comes a day after he warned Canada of “far WORSE” consequences if its leaders do not “fall in line.” He also took a shot at Ontario Premier Doug Ford, saying he’s the “less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother of the late, great, Rob Ford.” Ouch, that’s a pretty harsh burn. Trump added, “Someone should get these clowns to ‘fall in line’ or, the consequences for Canada will be far WORSE!”
The dispute between the US and Canada is getting pretty heated, with Trump threatening to increase tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel to 50% beginning January 1, 2027. Canada has vowed to respond with “dollar-for-dollar” tariffs beginning September 8. It’s like a game of tariff tit-for-tat, and I’m not sure who’s going to come out on top.
It’s not the first time Trump has tried to rename a body of water, either. He previously signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” Because, you know, that’s exactly what the world needs – more renaming of geographic features. The US government agencies and the Coast Guard have adopted the new name, but other countries have not recognized the change.
The White House even got into a dispute with The Associated Press over the name change, which is just ridiculous. A federal judge eventually ruled that the White House’s decision to punish the AP by restricting it from Trump’s events was “unconstitutional.” I guess that’s what happens when you try to strong-arm the media.
In related news, the House passed a Republican-led bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America back in May 2025. Because, why not, right? It’s not like there are more pressing issues to attend to.
In conclusion, the trade war between the US and Canada is getting pretty intense, with both sides throwing tariffs and insults back and forth. Trump’s threat to rename Lake Ontario is just the latest salvo in this battle, and I’m not sure what’s going to happen next. But one thing’s for sure – it’s going to be a wild ride. And who knows, maybe we’ll even get a new lake name out of it. Wouldn’t that be something? 🙄
