Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. The Supreme Court just gave President Trump the green light to continue building a massive new ballroom at the White House, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. The court’s decision was a close 5-4 ruling, with Chief Justice John Roberts and the liberal justices dissenting. I mean, who doesn’t love a good ballroom, right? But seriously, this project has been controversial from the start, with preservation groups arguing that it’s a waste of taxpayer money and a threat to the historic integrity of the White House.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation had challenged the project, but the court’s conservative majority said they didn’t have the legal right to do so. The justices didn’t say whether the project was lawful or not, but they basically gave Trump the go-ahead to keep on building. And build they will – the administration has already made significant progress on the nearly 90,000 square foot ballroom, which Trump claims is necessary for national security reasons. Because, you know, nothing says “national security” like a fancy ballroom.
Roberts penned a dissenting opinion, saying that the construction was “likely unlawful” and that the court was misconceiving the plaintiff’s injury. He even quoted Winston Churchill, saying that “we shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.” I guess that’s one way to look at it, but I’m not sure I buy it. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a full-blown controversy on our hands.
The decision is a major victory for Trump, who has been personally involved in the project and has vowed to make it “one of the Greatest ever constructed in Washington, D.C.” Critics argue that he’s violating the law by tearing down the East Wing and pursuing the project without congressional approval. But hey, when has that ever stopped him? The White House, they say, isn’t owned by the president who occupies it at any given time. But I guess that’s just a minor detail.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is “deeply disappointed” in the decision, and their president, Brent Leggs, said they “respectfully disagree” with the majority’s opinion. They argued that one of their members, Alison Hoagland, has shown that her enjoyment of the White House as an architectural historian is being harmed by the project. But the court’s majority rejected that argument, saying that “mere offense, disagreement, or distaste does not qualify as a concrete and particularized injury” required to sue. Bless their hearts.
As part of the litigation, the Trump administration revealed that hundreds of workers are spending 20 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep the project ahead of schedule and under budget. They’re using a type of concrete that’s also used at nuclear power plants and is nearly impossible to deconstruct. The Trust seized on that point, urging the Supreme Court to reject Trump’s emergency appeal to continue construction. They said the administration was trying to “outrun judicial review” by speeding ahead with a project that may already be irreversible. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
In the end, it looks like Trump is going to get his ballroom, and the preservation groups are going to have to keep on fighting. As I finish my coffee and wrap up this article, I’m left wondering what’s next for this project. Will it become a symbol of Trump’s legacy, or a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked executive power? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – it’s going to be a wild ride.
