Well, folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump has dropped another bombshell, and this time it’s a trade war with Canada, along with a plan to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America”. Because, you know, that’s exactly what we needed. I mean, who doesn’t love a good game of “let’s rename everything”?
I’m sitting here sipping my coffee, thinking, “what’s next?” The Reuters-Ipsos poll shows that Americans oppose the president’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” by a whopping 63% to 14%. That’s a more than 4-to-1 margin, folks. And let’s not forget, even Trump’s fellow Republicans oppose renaming Lake Ontario, 43%-33%. I guess you could say they’re not exactly thrilled about it.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – what about the trade dispute? Well, the new poll shows Americans oppose Trump’s new tariffs on Canada nearly 3-to-1, 57%-20%. And it’s not just the general public, even Republicans are only modestly in favor of the tariffs, 44%-33%. It seems like nobody is really asking for what Trump is selling here. But hey, he’s decided to press forward anyway.
The survey also shows that strong opponents (52%) outnumber strong supporters (7%) about 7-to-1. And when it comes to the trade dispute, significantly more Americans say the United States is more responsible for the dispute (46%) than say Canada is (12%). I guess that’s just a fancy way of saying we’re not buying what Trump is selling.
As I’m reading through this, I’m thinking, “bless their hearts” – the folks in the White House must be thinking we’re all just a bunch of fools. I mean, who tries to rename a lake in the middle of a trade dispute? It’s like they’re trying to distract us from the real issues. And the best part is, even Trump’s own party isn’t fully on board with this plan.
The fact that Trump’s move to rename the lake stems from growing tensions over his trade dispute with Canada is just hilarious. I mean, come on, Lake Ontario was named long before the Canadian province. It’s like he’s trying to rewrite history or something. And the fact that Americans say 68%-25% that they prefer the US not to take a hard line in negotiations, “even if it means it doesn’t get most of what it wants” just shows that we’re not as keen on this whole trade war thing as Trump is.
As I’m finishing up my coffee, I’m left thinking, “you can’t make this stuff up”. I mean, the road to the 2026 midterms is going to be a wild ride, folks. With Trump’s approval ratings already in the dumps, this little stunt isn’t going to help him much. And the fact that some Republicans are fretting that the Canada tariffs could disproportionately hurt their efforts to hold the Senate just adds to the comedy.
In conclusion, it seems like Trump’s plan to rename Lake Ontario and start a trade war with Canada is a big fat flop. Even his own party isn’t on board, and the general public is firmly against it. As I always say, “somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying” – but in reality, it’s just a big joke.
