I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest updates on President Trump’s helipad project on the White House South Lawn, and I have to say, it’s been a wild ride. The project, which aims to create a new landing zone for the presidential helicopter, Marine One, has been undergoing some changes, and it seems like some of the work is being reversed. I mean, who doesn’t love a good game of construction chess, right? According to reports, the new model of helicopter, the VH-92A Patriot, has been scorching the lawn during test runs, requiring a solution for the routine Marine One touchdowns.
The White House has never had a helipad, but Trump has said that the new one would be made of “carved granite.” Construction on the project began shortly after the conclusion of his backyard UFC fight in June, because, priorities. But in recent days, some of the construction has been visibly reversed, with workers disassembling the letters that spelled out “Seal of the President of the United States” around the circular, 100-foot-wide landing pad.
I have to wonder, what’s going on here? Is this a case of “measure twice, cut once” gone wrong? The White House declined to give details on the changes, saying only that they are “making improvements and adjusting accordingly” as part of the ongoing project. Okay, sure, that clears everything up. Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the new helicopters, also declined to comment, referring inquiries to the White House. Because, you know, transparency is overrated.
Trump has been personally involved in the helipad project, because, as a former real estate developer, he knows a thing or two about construction. And by “a thing or two,” I mean he’s overseen more than a dozen efforts to reshape infrastructure around the White House and Washington, DC. Many of those proposed projects, including his 90,000-square-foot ballroom at the White House, have been bogged down with legal challenges. But hey, at least he’s trying, right?
The president’s own Justice Department recently described the administration’s renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as a “botched” job to the tune of more than $14 million. And 58% of Americans said they feel dissatisfied or angry about the construction projections Trump has undertaken in DC, according to CNN polling. But White House spokesperson Davis Ingle heralded the unfinished helipad project as a symbol of Trump’s leadership, saying that the White House has “never looked better” under his leadership.
As I finish my coffee, I have to say that this whole thing is a bit of a mess. But hey, at least it’s entertaining. And who knows, maybe the helipad will eventually get finished, and it’ll be a beautiful, granite masterpiece. Until then, I’ll just be over here, sipping my coffee and enjoying the show. After all, as they say, “you can’t make this stuff up” – and I’m not even trying to. The helipad saga continues, and I’m excited to see what’s next. 🙄
