Disney’s latest cash grab Lorcana gets unexpected boost from Hyperia City release

Disney's latest cash grab Lorcana gets unexpected boost from Hyperia City release

After a year of turmoil in the trading card game market, it’s refreshing to see Disney Lorcana’s latest set, Hyperia City, ends 2026 on a high note. With its beautiful original art and exciting new gameplay mechanics, Hyperia City is a balm for the soul, separating itself from the worst factors weighing down this corner of the tabletop gaming market. As a cynical but amused gamer, I have to give credit where credit is due – Ravensburger has done an excellent job with this set, and I’m excited to see what the future holds, even if it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.

Digital Play Is Coming, Because Of Course It Is

Just as the hype engine for Hyperia City kicked into gear, Ravensburger dropped some long-awaited news: a digital version of the game is coming soon to mobile and desktop. Because, you know, what’s a game without a digital version these days? It’s not like we’re still in the dark ages of gaming or anything. A Disney Lorcana app has existed from day one, but it’s about time we got a way to play virtually, either against other players or a computerized opponent. I mean, Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon Trading Card Game have had digital adaptations for years, so it’s about time Disney Lorcana joined the party.

A Motley Crew Of Disney Favorites

Each of Disney Lorcana’s sets will appeal to different people for different reasons, but Hyperia City has one of the most interesting ensembles of franchises yet. Coco is the big focus this time around, with strong presences for Big Hero 6 and The Sword in the Stone, representing the broad academic range of the M.A.G.I.C. academy in town. And, of course, we have the complete cast of The Aristocats, because who doesn’t love a good cat-themed deck? The design and franchises covered in Hyperia City are firing on all the right creative cylinders, and I have several different decks I want to experiment with now.

Reinventing The Inkwell, Because Innovation Is Key

Unlike other TCGs, Disney Lorcana has taken its time in rolling out new card mechanics. But Hyperia City introduces a new element that has the potential to change up the game’s dynamics moving forward: ink drop tokens. These tokens provide an alternate way to play cards and can be generated by various cards in the set. It feels like Hyperia City is just scratching the surface of this new element, and I’m curious to see how it will impact the game’s dynamics. I mean, who doesn’t love a good mechanic that shakes things up?

Shadows On The Horizon: Into The Inkdark, And The Collector’s Dilemma

Amidst all the excitement of one set’s launch, I admit I’m a little concerned about the next set, Into the Inkdark. The focus is on the villains, which is an area where Ravensburger shines, but I’m worried about the impact of the new Collector Boosters on the market. These premium boosters will feature only foil cards inside, with a higher chance of pulling Enchanted or Iconic cards. But at what cost? The pull rate on Enchanted and Iconics is already too low, and the introduction of a new rarity, Illustrious, will only further crunch the issue downward. It’s like Ravensburger is trying to create a new level of exclusivity, where only the most dedicated (and wealthy) collectors can afford to keep up.

In conclusion, Hyperia City is a fantastic set that ends 2026 on a high note for Disney Lorcana. With its beautiful art, exciting new gameplay mechanics, and digital version on the horizon, there’s a lot to be excited about. But, as always, I’m wary of the corporate machine that drives the TCG industry. Ravensburger, don’t make me have to choose between my wallet and my love for Disney Lorcana. That’s just not fair. So, here’s to Hyperia City, and may the odds be ever in your favor – you’re going to need it to pull those Illustrious cards.
