Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump is at it again, suggesting that New Mexico should change its name to “New America”. Because, you know, that’s exactly what the country needs – a name change to distract us from the real issues. I mean, who needs to focus on the economy or healthcare when we can debate the merits of renaming a state? Trump made this brilliant suggestion on Truth Social, because where else would he make such a proclamation? He wrote, “New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” Yeah, no kidding, we’re not Mexico, but I’m pretty sure the good people of New Mexico are aware of that already.
Trump’s comments about New Mexico, a state he lost by 6 points in 2024, come as Republicans are getting a little nervous about holding their congressional majorities in November. Apparently, voters are saying that the president isn’t paying enough attention to the country’s most pressing problems. You think? Trump claimed, without citing any evidence, that home values and incomes would rise if New Mexico changed its name. And, of course, he had to throw in some baseless claims about rigged elections, because why not? He said, “Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!” Yeah, sure, because a name change is all it takes to fix corruption.
This isn’t the first time Trump has suggested renaming New Mexico, although it’s the first time he’s been so… forceful about it. In September, he posted a map of the state with “Mexico” crossed out and “America” written underneath. I’m sure that was a totally serious and not-at-all-childish suggestion. The White House even reposted it on their X account, because why not? It’s not like they have better things to do.
It’s just the latest renaming push from Trump, who seems to think that he has the power to change the names of anything he doesn’t like. He signed an executive order in August to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” as part of his ongoing trade war with Canada. Because, you know, that’s exactly what the Canadians are worried about – the name of a lake. He’s also tried to rename the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” and has floated the idea of renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait”. Modest guy, isn’t he?
But here’s the thing: Trump doesn’t actually have the power to rename states. That would need to happen within the state itself. New Mexico’s name has been around since the 16th century, long before the United States even existed. So, it’s unlikely that the state is going to change its name just because Trump thinks it’s a good idea. Bless their hearts for even considering it, though.
In conclusion, Trump’s suggestion to rename New Mexico is just another example of his… let’s call it “creative” approach to problem-solving. I mean, who needs to actually address the issues when you can just change the name of a state? It’s not like it’s going to happen, but hey, at least it’s entertaining. And who knows, maybe someday we’ll have a whole country full of “America”-named states and landmarks. Wouldn’t that be something? 🙄
