Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest from the National Transportation Safety Board, and let me tell you, it’s a doozy. They’re calling to eliminate manual toll payment lanes from highway toll plazas after a pretty horrific accident back in August 2024. An SUV slowed down to change lanes and was hit by a tractor-trailer, killing two people and injuring three. The NTSB says that if the highway had only electronic tolling, the crash would have been avoided. I mean, who doesn’t love the idea of fewer toll booths and less chance of getting rear-ended?
The accident happened at the Interstate 80 toll plaza near Swanton, Ohio, and it’s just a mess. The SUV was traveling in the left lane when the driver suddenly slowed down and merged right to get to the manual toll lanes. The truck behind her didn’t have time to react and slammed into the back of the vehicle. The NTSB found that the SUV driver was experiencing fatigue and lost situation awareness, which is just a fancy way of saying she was tired and not paying attention.
The board’s report says that the crash could have been avoided if the highway only had electronic tolling and provided clearer information about toll payment options. I mean, it’s not like it’s rocket science to figure out how to pay a toll, but apparently, it’s a challenge for some people. The NTSB also found that the signs before the toll plaza were confusing, saying that the high-speed lanes were only for vehicles with an EZ-Pass transponder.
The NTSB investigators reviewed video of the toll plaza and found that over 1,000 drivers made similar last-minute lane changes in the three weeks before the crash. That’s just crazy. It’s like people are trying to win a bet on who can make the most dangerous lane change. The NTSB concluded that doing away with all the slow-speed toll booths entirely would reduce the need for lane changes and eliminate the resulting wrecks.
The NTSB is recommending that the Federal Highway Administration, Ohio, and an association of toll owners and operators adopt fully electronic tolling. They’re citing the “inherent safety risk” of vehicles going at different speeds and changing lanes to pay tolls. I mean, it’s just common sense, folks. Fewer toll booths, fewer lane changes, fewer accidents. It’s a no-brainer.
In the end, it’s just a sad story about a preventable accident that could have been avoided with a little more planning and attention to detail. The NTSB is trying to make our roads safer, and I applaud them for that. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to refill my coffee cup and try not to think about all the crazy drivers out there. And on a lighter note, I guess this is one way to get people to start using those fancy toll passes – just make it the only option! 🚗💨
