Sam Neill, whose portrayal of the brilliant paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park helped define a generation of cinematic adventure, has died at the age of 78.
According to his family, Sam Neill passed away on Monday, July 13th, in Sydney, Australia. “He was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam Neill remained cancer free,” his family added.
Neill had previously been treated for stage-three blood cancer, but announced in April 2026 that he was cancer free.
Notable Film Roles
Born in Northern Ireland and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand, Neill’s other notable film roles included Event Horizon, Peter Rabbit, The Hunt for Red October, and Bicentennial Man. He also played an Asgardian actor portraying Odin in Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder.
Neill also had an extensive television career, appearing in the miniseries Merlin, for which he received an Emmy nomination, as well as The Tudors and Peaky Blinders.
Legacy of Jurassic Park
However, Neill will be best remembered for his role in the Jurassic Park franchise. He first starred as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 original and went on to portray the character twice more on film — in 2001’s Jurassic Park III and 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion — as well as in video games and even a Super Bowl commercial.
Discussing the franchise’s ageless legacy, Neill reflected in a 2022 interview with Gizmodo, “We were making popular culture. But isn’t it strange how sometimes things that are made for popular consumption persist? You know, if you think, going back to my day, progressive rock—prog rock—took itself very seriously for a while. No one remembers it anymore. And that was made with serious intent. Whereas I don’t know, a song like ‘Be My Baby,’ it can never perish. And there’s something about that first Jurassic, it popped it because it broke new ground and people went into the cinema and went, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe what I’m seeing.’ I don’t know. It was just something that sort of hit a chord at the time and it’s become curiously ageless. I’m not sure if I can completely explain why that is.
In conclusion, Sam Neill’s passing marks the end of an era for fans of the Jurassic Park franchise and the film industry as a whole. His iconic portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant will continue to inspire and entertain audiences for generations to come, cementing his legacy as a beloved and talented actor.
