Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about how Starbucks is already rolling out their Pumpkin Spice Latte, and I just can’t help but think, “Isn’t it a bit too early for all this fall fuss?” I mean, it’s still August, and the temperatures are still in the 90s. Labor Day is nearly two weeks away, and in many parts of the country, school hasn’t even started yet. But hey, who needs a gradual transition into fall when you can just jump right into pumpkin spice everything?
You know, it’s not like Starbucks is just casually releasing their fall menu; they’re making a big deal out of it. They’re bringing back the PSL, along with the rest of their fall favorites, and it’s all because they want to get a head start on the seasonal retail game. I guess you could say they’re trying to make the most of the “seasonal retail creep” that sees Halloween decorations in stores in August and Christmas decorations soon after Halloween.
I have to admit, the PSL has been a game-changer for Starbucks. It was first tested in 2003 and made its nationwide rollout in 2004, and it quickly became the company’s most popular seasonal drink. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love a good pumpkin spice latte? It’s like the ultimate fall treat. But I’m not sure I’m ready for it just yet. I mean, can’t we just enjoy the last few weeks of summer without being bombarded with fall-themed everything?
It’s worth noting that Starbucks has been using high-profile, limited-time releases like the PSL to boost sales and brand awareness. And it seems to be working, especially since the company has been struggling with sluggish sales in recent years. But things started to turn around last year, thanks to a costly turnaround plan under a new CEO, and the chain has reported its fourth straight quarter of improving US sales.
In the end, I suppose it’s all just a bit of harmless fun. And hey, if you’re one of those people who’s been waiting all year for the PSL to return, then go for it. Enjoy your pumpkin spice latte and your fall-themed merchandise. Just don’t expect me to be joining you anytime soon. I’ll stick to my summer vibes for now, thank you very much. And who knows, maybe by the time the actual fall season rolls around, I’ll be ready for a PSL or two. But for now, I’m just not feeling the fall spirit. 🙅♂️
