Perfect Dark reboot axed just as it started looking decent somehow

It’s a miracle we even got to see the cancelled Perfect Dark reboot’s shiny new parkour mechanics, considering Xbox’s trigger-happy approach to project cancellations. I mean, who needs a finished game when you can just reboot the franchise every few years and hope the nostalgia train keeps on chugging? The now-cancelled Perfect Dark reboot is making headlines today after new footage from the title surfaced, showing parkour and Carrington’s influence. Because, you know, what’s a Perfect Dark game without a healthy dose of wall-running and gadgets?

The latest entry in the Perfect Dark series was meant to be a reboot of the franchise, developed by The Initiative, a new studio formed at Xbox with one mission: to give Joanna Dark a new platform to stretch her legs on. It turns out Xbox pulled the plug pretty far into development when they cancelled the title back in July 2025, as new footage from the cancelled development has surfaced online. I guess that’s what happens when you’re trying to make a game that’s both a nostalgic throwback and a modern, sleek experience – sometimes it’s just easier to cancel the whole thing and blame it on “creative differences” or “market trends.”

The new footage appeared via a report from the gaming website MP1st, and the footage (which may have been acquired from a VFX developer’s portfolio) shows destructible environments, sci-fi weapons, and more. The gameplay leaked from the now-cancelled title can be seen in the X post below, because who needs a proper gameplay trailer when you can just leak some scraps from a VFX artist’s portfolio? The two-minute gameplay video shows many short clips, which appear to be from a developmental build of the rebooted Perfect Dark. The footage includes several locations (with one futuristic location looking mighty close to the Carrington Institute in previous titles), from sci-fi labs to a city street.

The Gameplay We Never Got to See

The gameplay then shows clips of the controlling player (which is probably behind the visor of protagonist Joanna Dark) experimenting with a selection of weapons, including a rotary grenade launcher and her signature pistol, The Falcon. The player is shown shooting fruit, potentially showing how physics works in Perfect Dark in one scene, and is seen running along a wall like one would expect from Mirror’s Edge on next-generation consoles. It’s a shame we’ll never get to see how this gameplay would have been refined and polished, but hey, at least we have the memories of what could have been.

A Glimpse into the Development Process

According to IGN, Joanna Dark actress Alix Wilton Regan previously stated that the Perfect Dark reboot was “pretty far along,” adding, “I’d done entire chapters of this universe,” suggesting The Initiative had been much further along in development than fans had realized. This new Perfect Dark footage proves the title was playable before cancellation, and shows that Xbox will cancel projects even that far into development. I guess that’s just the risk you take when you’re working on a high-profile project – sometimes it’s not just about making a good game, but also about meeting the expectations of the corporate overlords.

The Future of Perfect Dark

While this reboot of Perfect Dark was cancelled and The Initiative was culled, it remains to be seen whether the franchise will come back again, if at all, in the future, considering Xbox appears to cancel development at the drop of a hat for its ongoing “reset.” Maybe they’ll just reboot the franchise again, because that’s worked so well in the past. Who knows, maybe someday we’ll get to see a Perfect Dark game that’s actually finished, but until then, we’ll just have to keep dreaming.

And so, another game bites the dust, a victim of the eternal cycle of hype, cancellation, and rebooting. But hey, at least we got to see some cool parkour mechanics, right? That’s gotta count for something. As I always say, “a game cancelled is a game that will never be forgotten” – or at least, that’s what I keep telling myself to justify the countless hours I’ve spent following the development of games that will never see the light of day.
