President Donald Trump told reporters that Russian President Vladimir Putin “is wanting to make a deal,” and if Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky “is wanting to make a deal, that’d be very nice.” Yeah, because that’s all it takes, just a nice chat and a handshake, right? But let’s get real, the reality in Eastern Europe is far from nice. A Russian jet-propelled drone recently breached Moldovan airspace, and Putin’s missiles and drones killed five people in a new onslaught in Kyiv.
The incidents just keep piling up, and it’s hard to keep track of all the chaos. But one thing is clear: the war in Ukraine is getting worse, not better. And despite Trump’s optimistic comments, the prospect of a peaceful resolution seems as elusive as ever. I mean, the guy thinks that the holdup is just because two people hate each other? That’s not exactly a deep understanding of the complex political and historical factors at play here.
And don’t even get me started on the US diplomatic efforts. Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff’s meetings with Putin and Zelensky have been met with skepticism, and their comments have raised more questions than answers. Kushner’s talk of finding a “win-win” situation for both sides sounds like something out of a real estate deal, not a peace negotiation. And Witkoff’s glowing comments to Putin about their meetings being a highlight to remember in retirement? Yeah, that’s just creepy.
The US president’s history of flattering the Russian leader has long cast doubt on the administration’s motives on Ukraine. And with Russia sending hints about future economic opportunities between the two nations, it’s hard not to wonder if Trump is more interested in making deals than in finding a just peace. The fact that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent partly blamed Ukraine’s attacks on Russian infrastructure for high oil prices only reinforces that impression.
It’s all just a big mess, and I’m not sure how it’s going to get cleaned up. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says there’s a chance to “maybe reach a conclusion there that’s acceptable to both sides” over the next few weeks, but I’m not holding my breath. Until the US can come up with a genuine peace effort that doesn’t just reflect Russia’s goals, I’m afraid we’re in for another long and bloody winter in Ukraine.
