Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Ken Urker, the partner of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, has died at the age of 34. I mean, what a tragic story all around. For those who don’t know, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was the subject of a bunch of documentaries and media attention for her role in killing her abusive mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. It’s just a wild and sad story.
Urker was found dead at a residence in Raceland, Louisiana, on Thursday evening, which just so happened to be his birthday. The Lafourche Sheriff’s Office confirmed the news to CNN, and an investigation is underway. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this in the coming days.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard is quoted as saying she’s “in disbelief” and can’t think straight after hearing the news. She told People magazine, “I’ve screamed until my throat burns.” I can only imagine how tough this must be for her, especially after everything she’s been through. She also asked for privacy and compassion for their daughter, families, and everyone grieving Ken during this difficult time.
It’s worth noting that Gypsy Rose Blanchard met Urker while she was in prison serving time for her role in her mother’s death. Dee Dee Blanchard had convinced doctors and those around her that Gypsy Rose was afflicted with all sorts of ailments that she didn’t actually have, including leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and asthma. It’s just heartbreaking to think about.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard became the subject of documentaries like HBO’s “Mommy Dead and Dearest” and “The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard” during her time in prison and after her release in December 2023. I’ve seen some of these documentaries, and it’s just a really tough story to watch.
Urker had written a supportive letter to Blanchard after watching “Mommy Dead and Dearest,” and they eventually started talking on the phone. She said on a podcast that within five minutes of talking, she felt like they had known each other their whole lives. They got engaged while she was in prison, but he split up with her months later.
It’s also worth mentioning that Gypsy Rose Blanchard had previously married a Louisiana teacher named Ryan Anderson in a prison wedding ceremony in July 2022, but they parted ways in 2023. She rekindled her romance with Urker, and they welcomed a child together at the end of 2024. Their baby girl, Aurora, was born exactly a year after Blanchard was released from prison.
Urker described the baby as “the greatest gift of all” on Instagram, and Gypsy Rose Blanchard said on a podcast that holding her baby made her feel like she wanted to give her everything that she wasn’t. She also talked about her dreams, saying she wants to have another child and get married.
In conclusion, this is just a really sad story all around. My heart goes out to Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her family during this difficult time. And I have to say, it’s just a reminder that life is full of ups and downs, and we never know what’s going to happen next. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up, and this story is definitely a wild and tragic ride. May Ken Urker rest in peace, and may Gypsy Rose Blanchard find the happiness and peace she deserves.
