Gerald Casale, co-founder of DEVO, is set to release a video on the 250th birthday of the United States that excoriates America’s president and previews the musician’s upcoming solo album. Coming out on July 4th, the animated video for “Just Do It!” takes viewers through a trip with President Donald Trump, a dictator in the video’s case, leading a MAGA zombie army as he literally sucks money from country, sledgehammers the Liberty Bell, and glares at a crumbling Statue of Liberty like Nero on the walls of Rome, according to Rolling Stone, which spoke with Casale in advance of the video’s release. Oh, and Trump runs over peaceful protestors in an ambulance. The likenesses of Jeffrey Epstein, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, and Steve Bannon make appearances in the surreal and biting satire. Casale and Italian artist Max Papeschi wrote the script, and Maurizio Temporin animated.
Gerald Casale told Rolling Stone that “I had the idea for the lyrics and concept since Trump’s first term in 2016,” “It was obvious then he was an anti-democracy tyrant. Since his return in 2024, he has grown exponentially unhinged.”
Upcoming Solo Album and Tour
“Just Do It!” will be the first single from Casale’s forthcoming solo record Wetiko. The song was co-written by Casale with Czech electronic composer Moimir Papalescu. DEVO’s Josh Hager added guitar and keyboards, and Jeff Friedl, the band’s live drummer, gave the song its back beat, Rolling Stone reported.
DEVO will be on tour starting in August supporting Billy Idol before they split off for a headlining trek then a co-headlining stretch with the B-52s for the “Cosmic De-Evolution Tour.” Fans can look for DEVO tickets here.
