Mastodon Drops New Album Featuring Josh Homme Guest Spot

Mastodon have announced a new album titled Marrow Deep, which is set to arrive August 28th via Loma Vista Recordings. Ahead of its release, the band has unleashed the song “Snakes for Dinner” featuring Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme.

Marrow Deep marks the band’s first album in five years, following 2021’s Hushed and Grim. It’s also the first album since the passing of Mastodon founding guitarist-singer Brent Hinds, who died in a motorcycle accident last year, just months after parting ways with the band.

Album Details

The album is the first recorded with the band’s new lineup, which features classic members Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher, and Brann Dailor alongside new guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira. The LP was co-produced by Mastodon, Patrik Berger (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX), and Kurt Ballou (High on Fire, Converge), along with being mixed by Andrew Scheps (Adele, Black Sabbath, Metallica).

Press Release and Band Statement

Per a press release, “Inspired by the Three Fates of Greek mythology and the fragile threads connecting life, loss, and destiny, Marrow Deep channels the intense personal experiences of the intervening years into some of the most expansive, adventurous, and emotionally resonant music of the band’s storied career.”

Sanders noted, “Bill, Brann, and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us. That’s a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice. It’s reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we’re united, and excited to get to work. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to do this record.”

Collaboration with Josh Homme

Homme, who last appeared on a Mastodon album when he contributed to “Colony of Birchmen” on 2006’s Blood Mountain, lends his vocals to the final minute of “Snakes for Dinner,” appearing in the trippy music video, as well.

Upcoming Tour and Album Release

The song follows the single “Your Ghost Again,” which serves as a tribute to Hinds and was named our Heavy Song of the Week upon its release last month.

Mastodon will support Marrow Deep with a previously announced fall North American tour featuring support from Deafheaven and Alcest.
