Trump’s Venezuelan Wishful Thinking: Mining Mirages and Rare Earth Fantasies

In what can only be described as a masterclass in MAGA wishful thinking, President Trump has now set his sights on Venezuela’s so-called “vast” mineral wealth. Never mind that the country is a geopolitical dumpster fire run by a narco-dictator, Trump apparently believes American companies can just waltz into a failed state and start extracting rare earth elements like it’s a theme park ride at Mar-a-Lago.

The administration’s sudden obsession with critical minerals reads like a desperate attempt to distract from their complete inability to actually solve America’s supply chain issues. Instead of fixing domestic mining bottlenecks or addressing environmental concerns, they’re drooling over Venezuelan coltan while ignoring the fact that China still controls 90% of global rare earth processing.

Here’s the reality check: Venezuela’s mineral deposits are largely unverified because two decades of socialist mismanagement have left the country without functioning geological surveys. The Orinoco Mining Arc? More like the Orinoco Criminal Playground, where guerrilla groups, drug cartels, and illegal miners are currently having a field day. But sure, let’s send American workers into that mess and call it “energy independence”!

The real kicker? Even if we somehow magically secured these resources (which we won’t), we’d still have to ship them to China for processing because our own domestic refining capacity is basically non-existent. So we’d be trading one dependency for another while lining the pockets of corrupt officials and putting American lives at risk.

This whole Venezuela mining fantasy is nothing more than a desperate attempt by the Biden administration to appear tough on China while simultaneously kowtowing to every socialist regime that offers a handshake. It’s the economic equivalent of trying to fix a leaky roof by painting the ceiling – completely pointless and potentially dangerous.

Meanwhile, back in reality, America’s actual critical mineral strategy remains stuck in neutral while China continues to tighten its stranglehold on the global supply chain. But hey, at least Trump can tweet about Venezuelan “blue gold” while the real mining happens in Xinjiang!
