Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump has announced that he’s nominating Lance Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper, to be the director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). I mean, who doesn’t love a good surprise on a Saturday morning? Schroyer is currently a senior adviser to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, so I guess you could say he’s got some experience in the field. According to the agency, he’s been overseeing the strategic coordination of immigration enforcement and serving as a liaison between local, regional, and federal law enforcement agencies. Sounds like a real go-getter, this guy.
So, a little bit about Schroyer’s background. He’s a former Marine and used to be a major in the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety’s Emergency Services Unit. He directed specialized units that handled disaster response, civil disturbance, and immigration enforcement. I’m sure that’s a real thrill-ride. The Department of Homeland Security says he’s got over 29 years of law enforcement experience, which is definitely impressive. Trump seems to think he’s the right man for the job, calling him a “proven leader” and urging the Senate to confirm him ASAP.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – what about the current acting ICE director, David Venturella? Well, it seems he’s just keeping the seat warm until Schroyer gets confirmed. And before him, there was Todd Lyons, who stepped down this spring. It’s been a bit of a revolving door over at ICE, if you know what I mean. Trump’s nomination announcement comes after a pretty chaotic year for the agency, with all sorts of controversy surrounding their deportation efforts and some pretty scary incidents involving federal agents.
Mullin, who’s been a big supporter of Trump’s immigration crackdown, seems to think Schroyer is the perfect guy for the job. He said Schroyer is “coming straight from the operational field” and has the experience and leadership skills to get the job done. And let’s not forget, it’s been 11 years since the Department of Homeland Security has had a Senate-confirmed ICE director, so I guess it’s about time they got someone in there.
It’s worth noting that Schroyer has worked under the 287(g) program, which allows ICE to authorize state and local law enforcement officers to perform specific immigration enforcement duties. And, of course, there are all sorts of critics who are worried about what this nomination means for the future of immigration enforcement in this country. But hey, that’s a whole other can of worms.
The Senate is going to have to confirm Schroyer, and I’m sure that’s going to be a real barnburner of a debate. I’ll be popping some popcorn and pulling up a front-row seat to watch that one. In the meantime, it’s going to be interesting to see how this all plays out. Will Schroyer be the one to finally bring some stability to ICE, or will it be more of the same old chaos? Only time will tell, folks.
In conclusion, it’s been a wild ride watching this story unfold, and I’m sure it’s far from over. Schroyer’s nomination is just the beginning, and I have no doubt that there will be plenty of twists and turns along the way. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up – and I’m excited to see what happens next. So, stay tuned, folks, it’s going to be a bumpy ride! And who knows, maybe Schroyer will surprise us all and turn out to be the best thing that’s ever happened to ICE. But I’m not holding my breath. 😊
