The attacker yelled “Allahu Akbar” during both attacks, which has raised some eyebrows.
The suspect, 51-year-old Raul Morales, is in custody, and the police are still trying to figure out the motive behind the stabbings. Both victims, aged 57 and 50, were stabbed multiple times and were taken to the hospital in stable condition. The attack was unprovoked, and the police are reviewing security footage to learn more about what happened.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that he had been briefed on the “horrifying stabbings” and that the police are investigating the motive. He also expressed relief that both victims are in stable condition. A witness, Marianna Ellenberg, described the scene as “like a movie” and said she saw a man kneeling on the street with a knife sticking out of his back.
The police response was quick, and the suspect was arrested shortly after the stabbings. Volunteers with the Jewish civilian neighborhood watch group Shomrim responded to the scene and said the victim they saw was wearing a yarmulke and was either on his way to or returning from synagogue. The attack occurred on Tisha B’Av, a Jewish day of mourning and fasting, which makes it even more disturbing.
