Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Bryan Kohberger, the guy who pleaded guilty to stabbing four University of Idaho students, is now trying to take back his plea. I mean, what’s next? He’s claiming his defense team didn’t do their job and that he was misled about what a life sentence would be like. Bless their hearts, it sounds like he’s trying to play the system. Anyway, court records show that a pair of hearings have been scheduled for next June, so we’ll see how this all plays out.
So, Kohberger filed a petition to reopen the case, blaming his plea on “threats,” “false promises,” and wrong information. I’m not sure what kind of threats he’s talking about, but I’m pretty sure the families of the victims aren’t too happy about this development. CNN is trying to get in touch with them for comment, but so far, no luck. Kohberger’s attorney isn’t talking either, which isn’t surprising.
The judge who heard Kohberger’s guilty plea, Judge Steven Hippler, has scheduled a status conference for June 3, 2027, and an evidentiary hearing two weeks later. I guess this is just a procedural step while he considers the petition. It’s all very official and legal, but it sounds like a whole lot of drama to me.
After initially pleading not guilty, Kohberger agreed to a plea deal to avoid the death penalty and was convicted last July. During the hearing, he publicly admitted to fatally stabbing Ethan Chapin, 20; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Madison Mogen, 21, on November 13, 2022, in Moscow, Idaho. The judge asked him if he was pleading guilty because he was guilty, and he said yes. Now, he’s claiming his defense team didn’t disclose or review exculpatory evidence and cites “ineffective assistance of counsel during criminal proceedings” in his motion.
Kohberger also claims he was given a “gross misrepresentation” of what a life sentence and death row in Idaho would look like. I’m not sure what he was expecting, but I’m pretty sure life in prison isn’t going to be a walk in the park. He waived the right to appeal as part of his plea, but that doesn’t mean he can’t file a new case challenging the validity of his plea agreement.
This whole thing is just a big mess, and I’m not sure what’s going to happen next. Kohberger’s trying to get out of his plea deal, but it’s not looking good for him. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a big story on our hands. Anyway, we’ll just have to wait and see how this all plays out in June.
