Trump Team Mulls AI Chat With Xi's People Next Week Apparently

Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. It seems like the big cheeses from the tech world, including Meta, Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI, are heading to Washington, DC, next week to meet with Trump officials on the sidelines of Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s state visit to the White House. I mean, talk about a power play. The meeting is supposedly to discuss the future of AI and the risks that come with it, but let’s be real, it’s probably going to be a whole lot of posturing and not a whole lot of substance.

The Administration is trying to arrange a meeting with these tech bigwigs, and it’s not clear if President Trump will even show up. But hey, it’s not like he’s been dismissive of the whole AI thing or anything. I mean, he’s only gone on record saying that the whole idea of AI taking over the world is a “HOAX.” Bless their hearts, they really think they can just magically make this whole AI thing go away with a few choice words.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang are among those expected to attend Trump’s state dinner for Xi, and possibly even this meeting. Altman’s been saying that he thinks Trump and Xi could win the Nobel Peace Prize together if they could just come to some sort of agreement on AI development. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. I mean, the idea of those two getting along long enough to win a peace prize is just laughable.

The efforts to arrange this meeting come as AI leaders, including Altman, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, and SpaceXAI’s Elon Musk, have been expressing concerns about the dangers of AI if it’s not properly regulated. But Trump’s all, “Nah, it’s a hoax, folks, don’t worry about it.” Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a whole big thing about AI taking over the world.

House Speaker Mike Johnson says a meeting with AI executives and Trump is in the works, but it’s just a coincidence that it’s happening around the same time as Xi’s visit. Sure, Mike, sure. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Trump’s trying to one-up the Chinese on the whole AI thing.

Trump’s also been talking to Nvidia’s Huang, who’s been skeptical of AI doomsday predictions. And on Monday, Trump even called Huang while he was speaking at a summit in Los Angeles and put him on speakerphone for the crowd. Because, you know, that’s not awkward at all. Trump told the audience that he’s genetically predisposed to understand AI because his uncle taught at MIT. Okay, sure, Donald.

In conclusion, this whole thing is a big ol’ mess, folks. It’s a bunch of powerful people trying to outmaneuver each other, and probably not a whole lot of actual progress will be made. But hey, at least it’s entertaining to watch. And who knows, maybe Trump and Xi will surprise us all and come to some sort of agreement on AI development. But I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you. After all, as Trump would say, “The robots will not be taking over. The AI will not be taking over the rest of the world. The whole thing is a hoax.” Yeah, right, Donald. Keep telling yourself that.
